Helping Expose the "Dirty Little Secrets" About Abortion That No One Ever Talks About

By Ernest Ohlhoff, NRLC Director of Outreach

Under the leadership and talent of Vera Faith Lord, Alpha Omega Life is helping spread the pro-life message to an ever-widening group of churches, schools, and pro-life groups.

Vera has moved thousands of people by sharing her own personal story of her tragic abortion 19 years ago. Using a series of rhetorical questions she takes her audience (as she likes to say) on a trip "through the looking glass," exposing the "dirty little secrets" about abortion that no one ever talks about.

The response has been phenomenal. In a few short years her ministry has grown dramatically. She has been a workshop speaker at the National Right to Life Convention in 2003 and has spoken at several state conventions of NRLC affiliates.

Using her work experiences as a college recruiter speaking to young people, she has become a very popular speaker at many colleges and high schools including Harvard, Wellesley, MIT, Holy Cross, Boston College, Boston University, and numerous high schools and religious youth groups in Maryland, Pennsylvania, and New Jersey - - to name just a few. Her work has also been noticed and appreciated by a large number of pro-life leaders.

Olivia Gans, NRLC's director of American Victims of Abortion (AVA) explained that, "Vera Faith Lord has made an outstanding contribution to the work that AVA is doing. She is generous with the poignant story of her life. Her honesty and courage make her a great teacher. Our friendship has been a gift and strengthens the work we do together for the movement."

Barbara Lyons, executive director of Wisconsin Right to Life, recently commented, "Vera Faith Lord is a courageous and inspirational speaker who has been led through a devastating personal tragedy to prevent others from repeating her mistake. When Vera passionately and eloquently speaks of her unborn son, Gabrial, lost though her decision to abort him, Gabrial comes alive in the minds of the listeners. Her testimony to Gabrial's unique goodness is the triumphant gift of a mother's love for her child."

In another letter, Holly Gatling, executive director of South Carolina Citizens for Life, recalled Vera's impact. "I saw people coming from her workshop wiping tears from their eyes. It is my pleasure to enthusiastically recommend Vera Faith Lord as a vibrant, accomplished addition to your speakers bureau. I believe teens especially need to hear Vera's story - - a stunning example of the consequences of 'choice.'"

Rev. Rob Schenck is president of Faith in Action. Rev. Schenck featured Vera as the keynote speaker at the 2002 National Memorial for the Preborn, an interdenominational prayer service held in the U.S. Senate on January 22. He observed, "Vera is a very powerful advocate for the unborn child, her testimony spans religious boundaries and unites all of us in the realization that abortion has long-term devastating affects on women. She had the audience in tears - - including most of the clergy."

Fr. Frank Pavone, national director of Priests for Life, and president of the National Pro-Life Religious Council (NPRC), commented, "Vera is a honored member of NPRC and has provided invaluable assistance to women who have had or are thinking about abortion. Her testimony has already saved many lives."

Alpha Omega Life was originally formed as an outreach to the Greek Orthodox Church. But in recent years its message has appealed to a broader base within the pro-life movement. Vera has spoken to a variety of national and state pro-life groups as well as many different church groups and schools. She has presented scores of talks to students in Catholic and Christian schools.
