A Great Day for Unborn Children
Let's Make it a Great Year!
On April 1st, I was privileged to attend the President's signing of the Unborn Victims of Violence Act in the East Room of the White House. After all the work we've done over the years, it was obviously a highlight moment, not only for me personally but for the entire pro-life movement.
When the President came by he reached back into the second row to shake my hand. "Thanks for coming," he said. You could see in his eyes that this President means it; he is truly appreciative of the work pro-lifers do.
I've been an officer of National Right to Life for many years now, and a board member for even longer, since 1981. In that time I've seen great progress in our movement. But there have been losses, too. Children born when I became a board member in 1981 are now adults. In fact, they are survivors of a generation whose annual abortion numbers exceeded 1.6 million.
Now the tide is turning the other way. There are 300,000 fewer abortions each year. Polls show that America is once again a pro-life nation, and this includes its young people.
Thanks to the efforts of National Right to Life over the years, and the day-in, day-out work of our grassroots members, we have changed the nation. Twenty years ago, almost all polls showed a majority of Americans supported legal abortion. No more.
Back then it was almost impossible to pass free-standing strong pro-life legislation. Now we can. The world is changing, and it's because of you.
The great task of saving unborn lives and changing America's hearts is something that has been given to our generation. If we don't do it, who will?
National Right to Life has been in the forefront of every fight to protect unborn children and other vulnerable persons in danger of being put to death. The genius of an idea that made our success possible was to take a single issue around which people of many different viewpoints could agree - - namely, the right to life of all innocent people - - and to build a grassroots movement that would have as its single focus to save lives.
This means that people who disagree on any other issue, or who attend different churches, or who belong to different political parties, still come together to work to end the tragedies of abortion, infanticide, and euthanasia.
With the strength of a unified grassroots behind us, we have been able
to win lifesaving victories for the unborn. When the pro-abortion forces were at their
maximum strength we were able to check our opponents and prevent them from incorporating
abortion into every aspect of law and society, as they hoped to. And now that we have
grown stronger, we are able to pass important pro-life legislation, like the Partial-Birth
Abortion Ban Act and the Unborn Victims of Violence Act. We even have a pro-life President
who will sign the bills and thank us for our work!
Why do I support National Right to Life, and why do I support their strategy? I believe that the strategy and efforts of National Right to Life hold the most likely means of overturning Roe v. Wade and extending the protection of the right to life to unborn children. Our strategy and resources provide the best way to change the culture and win this fight.
The bottom line is this: had we not been there for unborn children all these years, so many more babies would have died, and abortion would have been ingrained into the culture so deeply.
I am so proud of the work of the National Right to Life staff who lead this fight. As you know, they are paid far less than their counterparts in other non-profit organizations, yet they accomplish so much for our cause. Pound for pound, they are the best staff of any advocacy group in Washington, D.C.
Bearing the brunt of the work along with our staff are the state Right to Life workers and the thousands of chapter volunteers in all 50 states. They're the ones who make the phone calls, write the letters, hold meetings. Their work is the visible support for the pro-life movement that means so much to us.
Why do I support National Right to Life, and why do I support their strategy?

The reason bills like the Partial-Birth Abortion Ban Act and the Unborn Victims of Violence Act were signed into law is that National Right to Life had the vision and the smart, pragmatic approach to find a way to get majority support and to get around the loopholes, landmines, and lies that the pro-abortion groups tried to use to derail us. National Right to Life has always said we don't just want to make a statement; we want to make a difference. And that's exactly what we've done.
This year, every dollar given to National Right to Life is important in furthering the struggle for the lives of unborn children. This year, you have a chance to make a big difference in every aspect of our movement. However you choose to give to the National Right to Life Committee, you will be doing one of the most important things you can for unborn children.
I can't thank you enough for the support you have given that has allowed us to carry on. When National Right to Life asks you this year to help the cause, please give your most generous gift possible. I invite our readers to join with us in supporting this great cause.
