SUPREME COURT REJECTS GOVERNOR BUSH’S APPEAL TO SAVE TERRI SCHINDLER-SCHIAVO FROM A DEATH OF STARVATION AND DEHYDRATION

Today, the Supreme Court rejected an appeal from Governor Jeb Bush, refusing to reinstate “Terri’s Law.” “Terri’s Law,” which was passed by the Florida legislature in an emergency session in October of 2003, was signed into law by Governor Bush and protected Terri Schindler-Schiavo from a painful death by starvation and dehydration.

“This horrific death sentence handed down by the Florida Supreme Court is allowed to stand because of the inaction of the U.S. Supreme Court,” stated Burke Balch, director of the Robert Powell Center for Medical Ethics. “In Florida, it’s illegal to starve a dog and yet the courts of Florida would sentence Terri, an innocent woman with a disability, to such an inhumane death.”

“We must focus on passing legislation through the Florida legislature to protect Terri and those like her. Pro-life citizens everywhere and all citizens concerned with the rights of those with disabilities must continue to stand by Terri and her family with prayers and support,” said Balch.
