Wednesday, March 10, 2004 NATIONAL RIGHT TO LIFE AND BLACK AMERICANS FOR LIFE SADDENED THAT NAACP TO SUPPORT ABORTION-ON-DEMAND On February 24, the NAACP announced that its board voted to take a pro-abortion position on the abortion issue. Unfortunately, many news media sources have failed to take note of this historic decision. “Sadly, many African-American women have believed the lies of pro-abortion groups and have aborted their children,” stated Day Gardner, director of Black Americans for Life. “After all that we, as Black Americans, have endured and achieved, to have the NAACP support abortion-on-demand, which has destroyed over 400,000 Black babies this year alone, is incomprehensible.” African-American women make up only 13.7 percent of the U.S. population of women of child-bearing age, yet the abortion rate among Black women is three times higher than that of White women. This is no accident– over 70% of all abortion providers are in minority communities. Ninety-four percent of abortion providers are in metropolitan areas, compared with only 2% of pregnancy resource centers. Since Roe v. Wade was handed down by the U.S. Supreme Court in 1973, over 44 million unborn babies have died, one-in-three or 14 million of those babies were Black. “We have the highest abortion rate in the country. Black women should not be silent when it comes to this abomination,” stated Ms. Gardner. “We must break the cycle.” Today, Planned Parenthood, America’s leading abortion promoter and provider, identifies its “core clients” as “young women, low-income women, and women of color.” Black Americans for Life is an outreach of National Right to Life.
