Abortion is Not the Indian Way
Indians for life (IFL) is an outreach of National Right to Life which works directly within the various Indian nations in the United States, with Indians who live both on and off reservations. IFL’s goal is to provide educational material and present workshops to the Indian community.
The headline “Abortion Is Not the Indian Way” is based on the Indian cultural beliefs that all forms of life are a special gift to be respected and used wisely. Abortion is not part of Indian heritage. In 2006 with the help of Indians for Life, the Tribal Council of the Pine Ridge Reservation in South Dakota voted unanimously to ban an abortion clinic on the Oglala Sioux Reservation in South Dakota. They also impeached the council president Cecilia Fire Thunder for trying to circumvent the council and establish an abortion clinic on tribal land. The mantra “Abortion Is Not the Indian Way” was created by Indians for Life and is used on bumper stickers and educational material given to a variety of members of many different tribes.
