Pro-Life Mitt Romney Tells NRLC He Is
“Grateful for Their Support
and Honored by the Trust They Have Placed in Me”
By Dave Andrusko
When National Right to Life endorsed pro-life Gov. Mitt Romney, NRLC
President Carol Tobias’s opening remarks at the National Press Club
were an explanation of why the nation’s preeminent pro-life
organization was endorsing Mr. Romney for President and a clarion
call to action.
“National Right to Life is proud and honored to endorse Governor
Mitt Romney for President of the United States,” she said. “On
pro-life issues, Mitt Romney and Barack Obama provide a stark
contrast. As the country’s most pro-abortion president, Barack Obama
has pursued a radical pro-abortion agenda.”
Then in words since echoed by pro-lifers across the country, Mrs.
Tobias added, “It is now time for pro-life Americans to unite behind
Mitt Romney. For the sake of unborn children, the disabled, and the
elderly, we must win.”
Take a moment to go to pages 8 and 9 in this edition of NRL News.
You’ll see a comparison of where the two men “Stand on Life” and
President Obama’s “Record on Life.” You’ll come away from spending
those five to eight minutes reading clearly understanding that Mr.
Romney and President do offer a “stark contrast.”
NARAL Pro-Choice America has no doubts. “The National Right to Life
Committee, along with anti-choice groups in states like Missouri,
Massachusetts, and Ohio have also endorsed Romney because of his
extreme views,” said NARAL President Nancy Keenan in April. She
added, in the calm rational tones that we’ve come to expect from
Keenan, “The zealots have their man—and that man wants to keep
waging a War on Women.”
Well, just to be accurate, by that time the political action
committees of numerous other NRLC affiliates had also endorsed the
former governor of Massachusetts, and many more have followed since.
But I guess if you’ve seen one “anti-choice group,” you’ve seen them
all. And the only “war on women” was the one NARAL was comfortable
averting its eyes from: baby girls who were killed because they were
females.
This was a fundraising letter from NARAL, so we would expect that
Keenan would write, “In a race this close, the money these
anti-choice groups will spend to defeat President Obama could tip
the scales in favor of Romney—unless we fight back.” Of course,
pro-abortion groups such as NARAL and EMILY’s List and Planned
Parenthood’s political arm are awash in money.
In stark contrast pro-life groups rely on volunteers, which makes
Keenan’s remark—“show anti-choice groups that their money won’t buy
this election”—almost comically inaccurate and misleading even by
pro-abortion standards.
Keenan concludes, “Mitt Romney said he was ‘honored’ to be endorsed
by these radical anti-woman extremists. That’s because he shares
their priorities.” Well, yes!
Here’s what Mr. Romney wrote, upon hearing of NRLC’s endorsement:
“The National Right to Life Committee has been on the front lines of
the fight to protect the unborn and uphold the sanctity of life. I
appreciate their leadership and the tireless commitment of their
nationwide grassroots pro-life effort. I am grateful for their
support and honored by the trust they have placed in me. And I look
forward to working together to carry out the great responsibility of
defending and protecting innocent human life.”
