Mr. Lawrence D. Garvey, Hero of the Unborn, RIP

The right to life movement and unborn children lost a real friend and hero when Lawrence D. Garvey passed away. For more than 30 years, he had been deeply involved in supporting and promoting the work of crisis pregnancy centers; pro-life education through national television, radio, and newspaper advertising; the work of local and state right to life organizations; and many important projects of the National Right to Life Committee and its Educational Trust Fund.

Mr. Garvey’s involvement in the Right to Life Movement has helped build many of the organizations whose work has sharply decreased the number of abortions in the United States in recent years.

On April 25, 2001, the National Right to Life Educational Trust Fund was proud to honor Mr. Garvey with the distinguished Proudly Pro-Life Award. His support, dedication, and belief in both Louisiana Right to Life and National Right to Life were both constant and generous. He worked closely with Mary Reilly Hunt, former director of development for NRLC; David N. O’Steen, Ph.D., NRLC executive director; and Darla St. Martin, NRLC co-executive director, and made it known to National Right to Life that he believed in what we were doing as well as how we were getting the job done.

Mr. Garvey was a founding partner of Radiofone, Inc., a cellular paging communications company, operating primarily in the Southeastern United States. Mr. Garvey, with his brother Donald, founded the company in 1958 and remained active in management until March 2000.

Mr. Garvey and his wife, Marla, had been married for over 50 years and have three children and several grandchildren. This modest, humble, giant of a man will be missed by all.
