Congressional Democratic leaders push
pro-abortion bills forward, WASHINGTON (October 15, 2009)—Congressional Democratic leaders are pushing forward with “health care reform” bills that would create large new federal subsidies for abortion, even while President Obama and his appointees continue to assure the public that the bills would have no such effect. At NRL News deadline, the Democratic leader in the U.S. Senate, Senator Harry Reid (Nv.), was publicly predicting Senate floor action before the end of October. In the House, Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-Ca.) intends to bring legislation to the floor as soon as she thinks she has mustered the votes to pass it. The Democrats hold majority control of both the House and the Senate, occupying about three-fifths of the seats in each house. President Obama has declared enactment of health care legislation to be his top domestic priority. The president and his spokespersons have made numerous public statements insisting that the legislation would not result in government funding of abortion.
Urgent—Condition Red Both the U.S. Senate and the U.S. House of Representatives may take up massive “health care reform” bills in late October or in November. While several versions of the bills currently exist, they all contain provisions under which the federal government would subsidize coverage of abortion, which would be a sharp break from decades of federal policy. In three different House committees, and two different Senate committees, senior Democratic lawmakers—allied with the Obama White House—defeated NRLC-backed amendments that would have removed the pro-abortion components from the bills. “Death Spiral” Typifies Rationing Danger WASHINGTON (October 15, 2009)—As congressional leaders negotiate the final versions of bills effecting the most massive health care restructuring in American history to the floors of the House and Senate for a vote (see stories, pages 10-11), the Wall Street Journal, in an October 6 editorial, warns that they are “ trying to engineer a ‘cheaper’ system so that government can afford to buy health care for all—even if the price is fewer and less innovative ways of extending and improving lives.”

HARD-WON PRO-LIFE PROGRESS Public Opinion Is Increasingly Pro-Life Recently, Americans have become more opposed to legal abortion. New analysis of combined Pew Research Center surveys conducted over the past three years shows that in 2007 and 2008, supporters of abortion rights clearly outnumbered opponents of abortion (those saying it should be illegal in most or all cases) by a 54%-40% margin. In contrast, in two major surveys conducted in 2009 among a total sample of more than 5,500 adults, views of abortion are about evenly divided, with 47% expressing support for legal abortion and 44% expressing opposition. … Declines in support for legal abortion are seen among a wide variety of demographic groups. … [B]oth men and women currently express less support for legal abortion than they did in 2007/2008 [not so for Democratic women, however (65% for legal abortion in 2007/2008 vs. 64% in 2009)]. Similarly, both whites and Hispanics have become significantly less pro-choice. …
