Urgent—Condition Red
Tell Congress NO to Pro-Abortion Health Care Bills!
Both the U.S. Senate
and the U.S. House of Representatives may take up massive “health
care reform” bills in late October or in November.
While several
versions of the bills currently exist, they all contain provisions
under which the federal government would subsidize coverage of
abortion, which would be a sharp break from decades of federal
policy. In three different House committees, and two different
Senate committees, senior Democratic lawmakers—allied with the Obama
White House—defeated NRLC-backed amendments that would have removed
the pro-abortion components from the bills.
Time is short. Please
take the actions recommended below, and urge your fellow pro-life
citizens to do likewise:
* Make phone calls to
the offices of your two U.S. senators. (Any state’s senators can be
reached through the Capitol Switchboard, 202-224-3121.) Tell your
senators’ staff persons that you wish to be recorded as opposed to
the health care bill that Senate Democratic Leader Harry Reid will
soon bring to the Senate floor (the bill does not yet have a
number), which will subsidize health plans that pay for elective
abortions. Leave your name and address, and ask for a written
explanation of your senator’s position.
* Make a phone call
to the office of your U.S. House member. (You can reach any U.S.
House member’s office through 202-225-3121—if you don’t know who
represents you in the House, just give the switchboard operator your
zip code.) Tell your representative’s staff person that you are
opposed to H.R. 3200, the health care bill that Speaker Nancy Pelosi
will soon bring to the House floor, under which the federal
government would operate a nationwide insurance program (the “public
plan”) that would pay for elective abortions.
* If possible, make
similar calls to the in-district offices of your senators and
representative in the House, with the same messages. The phone
numbers area available from the NRLC Legislative Action Center at
