McCain/Palin Form
Meet Pro-Life
Gov. Sarah Palin Within a couple of hours of the surprise selection of pro-life Gov. Sarah Palin to be pro-life Sen. John McCain’s vice presidential running mate, we were asked by The Hill newspaper to post a response on its blog. Here are the first two paragraphs of what I wrote: “The selection of pro-life Alaska Gov. Sarah Palin was a twenty on a scale of one to ten. The 44-year-old mother of five will accomplish what very few vice presidential selections have ever done: fundamentally change the dynamics of the contest for President. “From our single-issue perspective, pro-life Sen. John McCain could not have chosen a more compatible, more exciting running mate. The short-hand phrase is ‘ardently pro-life.’ Gov. Palin is, and much, much more.” Weeks later, few would disagree with either assertion: that Gov. Palin had upset pro-abortion Sen. Barack Obama’s well-laid plans by snatching away the “change” narrative and that she and Sen. McCain comprise a near-perfect team. That was not the consensus at the time.
What We Know and
Why That Matters As you read and make use of this edition of National Right to Life News, there will be only a few short weeks before our great nation will go to the polls to elect the next President of the United States. Voting is an enormous privilege, one for which hundreds of thousands of men and women have died to protect. Four years ago, according to the U.S. Census Bureau, 89% of registered voters took a few minutes out of their schedules to vote. But note that many people didn’t bother even to register: only 64% of those old enough to vote cast a ballot. Likewise in 2000 86% of those registered to vote (and only 60% of those eligible to vote) participated in an election so close that its final outcome was not determined for 35 days afterwards. If polling data are to be believed, for much of the general public, the abortion issue will not rank highest in their thoughts on November 4. After all, it is one of “those” issues that make most Americans uncomfortable. They prefer not to think about it. And yet we know that it is no exaggeration to say that Sen. John McCain and Gov. Sarah Palin comprise a pro-life presidential ticket that has the Abortion Establishment up in arms. By contrast, for NARAL and Planned Parenthood, the duo of Senators Barack Obama and Joe Biden constitute their “dream ticket.” Sarah Palin: the Perfect Choice for John McCain McCain Scores Perfect “10” at Saddleback Forum; Obama Flounders Federal Employee Giving Opportunity Provides Pro-Lifers Chance to Help NRL Educational Trust Fund Sarah: How a Hockey Mom Turned Alaska’s Political Establishment Upside Down A History of the Christian Church’s Witness against Abortion Republican Party Pro-Life Platform Language on Abortion Stronger and More Comprehensive Than Ever ATTENTION: Be a Part of the NRLC E-Mail List www.nrlc.org/join_our_mailing_list.htm

Writing
Straight with Crooked Lines I like to say that sometimes God writes straight with crooked lines. As a parish priest, you may imagine I was doing something else on Sunday morning, August 24, when Speaker of the House Nancy Pelosi made her now-infamous remarks on NBC’s Meet the Press about what the Catholic Church teaches about when human life begins and abortion. I did later hear what she said; but then, didn’t everybody? Speaker Pelosi said that, as a Catholic, she had long studied the issue and that the doctors of the Church had not been able to define when life begins. (Did she know that the “doctors of the Church” were not scientists or medical doctors?) She went on to say that, therefore, “The point is, is that it shouldn’t have an impact on the woman’s right to choose.” At any rate we pro-lifers have heard it all before—all the vacuous equivocations to hide the reality of what abortion is and does. For more than 35 years the pro-life movement has dedicated itself to opening the eyes of our fellow citizens to see that that tiny child in the womb is our sister or brother—and deserves compassion and protection! Or as the Democratic presidential nominee recently said (about everything else except the abortion issue), “We still don’t abide by that basic precept of Matthew that whatever you do for the least of my brothers, you do for me.” I do not know the motivation nor the intentions of the Speaker in making her remarks. Some have suggested ill-will, or purposeful misinformation, or even invincible ignorance, or perhaps just a politician marshalling arguments for a position already reached for other reasons.
