Cardinal Alfonso López Trujillo, RIP

Pro-life champion Cardinal Alfonso López Trujillo died on Saturday, April 19, 2008. Cardinal Trujillo was appointed president of the Pontifical Council for the Family by John Paul II in November 1990. He served diligently in this important position until the time of his death.

During his tenure as president of the Pontifical Council, he constantly stressed the need to respect the dignity of all innocent human life and spoke and wrote frequently on the life issues.

Archbishop Alfonso López Trujillo was the youngest Cardinal to be elevated to that position by the late Pope John Paul II.

At the funeral mass for Cardinal Trujillo, Pope Benedict XVI delivered these words, “How can we fail to thank him for the courage with which he defended the non-negotiable values of human life? We have all admired his indefatigable activity. One result of his hard work is the Lexicon, which constitutes a precious text for the formation of pastoral workers and an instrument for dialogue with the contemporary world on the basic themes of Christian ethics.”

Cardinal Trujillo’s strong pro-life leadership will be missed by both Catholics and all those who hold sacred the intrinsic value of the God-given gift of human life.
