A CRITICAL YEAR FOR PRO-LIFERS
By Wanda Franz, Ph.D.

The dramatic events in one major party’s primary election fight may obscure the incredible dangers the pro-life cause faces in this election year.  Behind the novelties of gender and skin color of the two remaining candidates in the Democratic primary battle there is still the same “old” fact:  they and the entire leadership of the Democratic Party are firmly and enthusiastically wedded to the pro-abortion ideology. They thirst for the power to impose their “progressive” anti-life vision on this country.  A sympathetic main stream press politely hides this fact. Instead there is a lot of empty rhetoric about “hope” and “change” and little about the radical policies that would emerge after the hoped-for election victory.

WHAT COULD HAPPEN

Every pro-lifer should take a clear-headed look at what we are facing if the pro-abortion forces are victorious in the next election.

All nominees for the Supreme Court and the rest of the federal judiciary would be picked for their determined support of Roe v. Wade and Doe v. Bolton.  Any reversal and correction of this extra-constitutional “law making from the bench” would be impossible for decades to come, given the long life of judicial tenures.  For the past 35 years we have been frustrated by the arrogance and intransigence of the Court.  Now, add another 35 years.

Given the enormous amounts of money raised by the pro-abortion forces for this election cycle, pro-lifers may face a Congress that is more pro-abortion than ever.  Pro-abortionists still regret their failure to enact the pernicious “Freedom of Choice Act” when Bill Clinton first became president.

It is true that the Supreme Court “constitutionalized” the right to abortion, overriding any legislative action.  However, the abortion “right” was extra-constitutionally imposed by nine unelected men in Roe v. Wade.  The pro-abortionists want to legitimize this action and add a stamp of approval “by the people” to Roe by having our congressional representatives enact the “Freedom of Choice Act.”  That way, pro-lifers would be robbed of the argument that Roe was only imposed by legislating from the bench.

The pro-abortionists see another, equally great “benefit” in the “Freedom of Choice Act”:  the law would make sure that there could be no more pesky pro-life legislation about preventing abortions on minors without involving the parents, abortion clinic regulations, informed consent for women considering an abortion, and so on.  On the legislative front, the pro-life movement would be dead in the water.

There would be no more “Hyde Amendment” that now prevents the expenditure of federal funds for abortion.  After a pro-abortion victory, your tax dollars would be rolling into the coffers of the abortion industry.

The “progressive” notions of health care always include the right to kill rather than care: abortion of the unintended baby as a federally guaranteed right, abortion for the imperfect baby and its abandonment immediately after birth, starving to death burdensome people who supposedly are in a “vegetative state,” more Oregon-style “right-to-die” legislation, and so on.

If you think that is too dark a picture, think again: Hillary Clinton, in her original health care plan in the 1990s, wanted to make abortion a part of routine and mainstream health “care.”  And to control costs, the permanently disabled would have received only care that would have improved their situation and nothing that kept them going when improvement was impossible.

Once again we would have the maddening experience of watching a president wipe out all pro-life executive orders of the previous pro-life president.  The power of the executive branch would be again at the service of the pro-abortionists, just as in the 1990s.

And our diplomats would be required to push for abortion rights under the deceptive label of “reproductive rights” at the UN and at the host countries where they are stationed to represent you and me.  Your tax dollars could be misused in the form of foreign aid that was available to another country only if it changed its law to allow for abortion on demand.

These are just the “low”-lights of what a pro-abortion victory would inflict on this country.

PRO-LIFERS MUST THINK SMART, WORK HARD AND SACRIFICE

First, let’s remind ourselves: we are not in this fight (yes, it is a fight and a battle against some rather “dark” forces) for our own advantage or glory.  We already have life; and we could enjoy it in many other ways instead of going to meetings, organizing, educating others and ourselves on right-to-life issues, signing petitions, persuading politicians, and donating and collecting money.  So let’s be clear, we have joined this noble cause for the sake of the unborn and those who are endangered by the anti-life forces because of their disabilities or frailties.

Second, we must know what we are talking about.  Therefore, come to the National Right to Life Convention in Washington, D.C., July 3-5, 2008 (see pages 8-9).  Visit the web site of NRLC at www.nrlc.org for a large store of facts and articles.  You must be in command of the facts to be effective.

Third, make sure your local NRLC chapter affiliate is well-organized.  My foreign-born husband always marvels at the astounding organizational ability of American women.  It’s time for American pro-life women to show their stuff (the men will come along).  If members in your right-to-life chapter are asleep, wake them up.  If they are fearful and feel helpless, encourage them and carry them along with your enthusiasm and drive.

Fourth, even if your resources in time and money are modest, remember that small sacrifices of time and money add up with those of others.  Every pro-lifer is important for success.

Fifth, pray.  God wants to be right behind you and give you strength as you sacrifice for the unborn babies.  Remember you are the Lord’s agent; so be humble but strong,
