Obama’s Record

* According to NARAL, Obama has a 100% pro-abortion record for 2005–07.

*Obama is a co-sponsor of the “Freedom of Choice Act,” a proposal so radical it would nullify virtually all federal and state limitations on abortion. “In the interests of truth in advertising, the bill should be renamed the ‘Freedom for Partial-Birth Abortionists Act,’” observed NRLC Legislative Director Douglas Johnson.

*Obama voted for legislation to allow federal taxpayer dollars to go to organizations that perform or promote abortion.

*Obama voted to kill a bill that would have required an abortionist to notify at least one parent before performing an abortion on a minor girl from another state.

*Obama opposed the Supreme Court decision that upheld the Partial-Birth Abortion Ban Act. “I am extremely concerned that this ruling will embolden state legislatures to enact further measures to restrict a woman’s right to choose, and that the conservative Supreme Court justices will look for other opportunities to erode Roe v. Wade ... .”

*Obama voted in favor of funding for embryonic stem cell research. “Embryonic stem cells can be obtained from a number of sources including in vitro fertilization. ... We should expand and accelerate research using these embryos.”

*Obama, in 2005, co-sponsored a bill that would allow the cloning of human embryos for research but prohibit their survival.

*Obama has made many statements pledging his absolute support for abortion. His statement to NARAL is typical: “I have consistently advocated for reproductive choice and will make preserving women’s rights under Roe v. Wade a priority as President. I oppose any constitutional amendment to overturn the Supreme Court’s ruling in this case.”

* Recently a pro-abortion blogger congratulated Obama because “as an Illinois state senator, he voted against BAIPA  [Born Alive Infant Protection Act] twice, and then, as chairman of the Health and Human Services Committee in 2003, prevented it from advancing to the floor. BAIPA was very similar to the federal Born-Alive Infants Protection Act which President Bush signed into law in 2002.

As columnist John Leo once wrote, “In effect, the bill says that babies born during abortions must be put on the same plane and extended the same care and constitutional protections as other babies. Once born, they cannot be discriminated against, killed, or allowed to die simply because they are unwanted.”

* Asked by NBC News’ Tim Russert, “Is there any words or vote that you’d like to take back?” Obama invoked Terri Schindler Schiavo. In March 2005, unanimous consent was needed in the Senate to get a measure quickly passed that would provide Terri’s family with one last opportunity to save her. Failing to stop that, Obama told Russert, was a “mistake.”
