Encouraging News: Abortions dropped a stunning 8% between 2000 and 2005, according to the Guttmacher Institute. Although tragically high, the 1.2 million abortions performed in 2005 is down 25% since it peaked in 1990. (See President’s column, page 3.) This most encouraging news, which came out a few days before the 35th anniversary of Roe v. Wade, went hand-in-hand with a decrease in the abortion rate and abortion ratio which both plunged to their lowest levels since 1974. Put another way nearly one in three pregnant women aborted in the early 1980s. By 2005, the proportion is closer to one in five.
Romney Withdrawal
Shakes Up Presidential Contest As NRL News went to press, former Massachusetts Gov. Mitt Romney announced he was withdrawing from the race to be the Republican Party’s presidential nominee. Equal parts unexpected and dramatic, Romney told an audience at the Conservative Political Action Conference February 7, “If I fight on in my campaign, all the way to the convention, I would forestall the launch of a national campaign and make it more likely that [Democrats] Sen. Clinton or Obama would win.” Romney’s surprise withdrawal leaves three remaining GOPers: Sen. John McCain, former Arkansas Gov. Mike Huckabee, and Rep. Ron Paul (Tx.). Romney’s announcement came just two days after a disappointing showing on “Super Tuesday.” McCain carried nine states on February 5, Romney won seven, and Huckabee finished first in five states.

THE FRUITS OF Since NRLC’s founding in 1973, we have been working strenuously to change attitudes about abortion. That we have made great progress is evident from numerous opinion polls and abortion statistics from the Guttmacher Institute (GI) and government agencies. The yearly number of abortions rose rapidly until reaching a plateau of about 1.55 million around 1980. It peaked at 1.6 million in 1990 and declined from that level by 25% to 1.2 million in 2005. The abortion rate, the number of abortions per 1000 women of child-bearing age, peaked at 29.3 in 1980 – 81. It declined 33% to 19.4 in 2005. Note that the number of women of childbearing age (15 – 44) rose from 52 to 61.8 million, or by over 16%, from 1980 to 2005. The fact that the abortion rate declined over 25 years, while the number of women of childbearing age rose, points to an attitudinal change in women with regard to abortion.
