Advantage Carried Tight Races Two overviews of the general elections in the November NRL News highlighted how many pro-life candidates prevailed even though enormous forces, unrelated to the pro-life issues, had threatened to capsize their election bids. Further evaluation and polling conclusively demonstrated that the pro-life advantage on the abortion issue saved at least 18 candidates for the House of Representatives and one Senate seat. The math is as straightforward as it is stark. Nationwide National Right to Life’s Political Action Committee was involved in 87 races. Thanks to the support of pro-lifers, it was victorious in 53% of the contests. However, these numbers alone do not do justice to the importance of the advantage pro-life candidates enjoyed over their opponents on the abortion issue.

People Voted” As the other page one story written by Political Director Karen Cross makes clear, a night in which many staunch pro-lifers were defeated would have been far worse, had it not been for a heroic effort by grassroots pro-lifers. November 7’s results were a setback. But a bump in the road is not the same as a disaster, which was avoided because of an outpouring of pro-life work. At a minimum, 18 congressmen and one U.S. senator would not be preparing to be sworn in next January, were it not for the carefully crafted and brilliantly executed game plan authored by NRL PAC. And only time will tell whether the six or so incoming Democrats who campaigned as pro-life back up their words with actions. Jacki Ragan took time off from her regular job as director of NRLC’s State Organizational Development Department to work for the PAC. A tireless worker in her own right, Ragan said that across-the-board efforts by local pro-lifers were key in winning races that were decided by as little as a few hundred votes. When interviewed for this story, she had just gotten off the phone after confirming that the opponent of a pro-life candidate had conceded. The margin of victory? Less than 250 votes!

BASICS ... On this page, we have frequently urged pro-lifers to heed the practical wisdom expressed by two sayings: “the point is not to make a statement but to make a difference” and “the perfect is the enemy of the good.” During this and past elections there were instances where the refusal to support a less than perfect candidate in order to make a “statement” led to an unintended “difference”: the less than perfect candidate lost to the Schumer-type candidate. And now we are told “the President’s judicial appointments need to meet the requirements of Mr. Schumer” instead of meeting the requirements of those who respect the Constitution. How will this advance pro-life principles? Are future justices meeting Schumer’s approval likely to overturn Roe v. Wade? Wouldn’t pro-lifers rather see their requirements met by future justices? Let’s remind ourselves of our purpose as pro-lifers: We want to secure the right to life as a fundamental right in our legal system. We want abortion to be made illegal. We want to safeguard the life of the infant born with weaknesses and imperfections. We want to protect the Terri Schindler Schiavos of this world from cruel “treatment” meant to kill them. We want to stay the hand of the euthanasia enthusiasts who would kill the inconvenient. But we should not want to engage in posturing destructive to the right-to-life cause. NRL News Archive2006
