Lt. Governor Michael Steele to Face Representative Ben Cardin in Battle to Fill Maryland Senate Seat

Rapidly Approaching When my children were young, my daughter danced and my sons performed in plays. Those who merely attended the performances didn't see all of the work--much of it mundane--and the preparation and planning that had been done to make this incredibly pleasurable evening possible. In a political sense, we're approaching show time! In choosing most of the nominees for the House and Senate, much of the foundation has been laid for the November 7 elections. Soon the decisions will be in the hands of voters. Since the last issue of NRL News, primaries have been held in Nevada, Wyoming, Florida, Arizona, Delaware, Maryland, Minnesota, New Hampshire, New York, Rhode Island, Vermont, and Wisconsin. Five still remain: Alaska, Massachusetts, Washington, Hawaii, and Louisiana. In the August issue, we looked at many U.S. Senate match-ups. On September 12, Democrats and Republicans chose their candidates to replace retiring pro-abortion Maryland Senator Paul Sarbanes (D). Democrats selected pro-abortion Congressman Ben Cardin. Cloning Initiative on November Ballot in Missouri Voters in Missouri will decide November 7 whether to amend the state constitution by adopting the so-called "Missouri Stem Cell Research and Cures Initiative." Proponents insist the measure is about "stem cell research" when, in fact, the initiative would allow researchers not only to lethally extract stem cells from human embryos but also "clone and kill" embryos at will. In addition, Section 5 of the four-page-long initiative "prohibits state and local governments from withholding state funds from cloners if their institutions are eligible to receive public funds for purposes other than stem-cell-related activities," said James Cole, Missouri Right to Life general counsel. "Under the initiative, if an institution is eligible for state funds--whatever the program, be it education, health, economic development, or whatever--the legislature cannot prevent the institution from receiving state funds for cloning and taking stem cells from the unborn." The initiative is strongly supported by pro-abortion state Auditor Claire McCaskill (D), who is running against pro-life incumbent Sen. James Talent (R). McCaskill is supported by EMILY's List, a wealthy political action committee that supports only pro-abortion female candidates who promise to oppose any limitations on abortion. Sen. Talent said he "cannot support the initiative because I've always been opposed to human cloning and this measure would make cloning embryos a constitutional right--without regard to medical necessity or changing technology."

THE "MIDDLE
GROUND" DECEPTION Paul Greenberg, the distinguished speaker at the closing banquet of the NRL Convention in Nashville, gave us the expression "slick Willie" to describe Bill Clinton. As a candidate, "slick Willie," in 1992, declared ever so sincerely that "abortion should be safe, legal, and rare." It sounded so sensible; but it was, in fact, misleading, dishonest, and nonsensical. Today's re-emergence of the slogan (and its variants) that "abortion should be safe, legal, and rare" did not, of course, arise by spontaneous combustion. No, there is pleading and bleating for a "middle ground" on abortion, because it sounds like the perfect double talk that "progressive" Democratic candidates would need for the elections in 2006 and 2008: be for "values" and "choice"--at the same time. For good measure, the newly moderate and, supposedly, "values"-concerned pro-choicer adds that the number of abortions needs to be reduced, because abortions are bad. Of course, we are never told why abortions are bad. Let's apply Bill Clinton's dictum that "abortion should be safe, legal, and rare" to other human actions, say, embezzlement. Make embezzlement safe and legal, and see how rare it becomes. Obviously, "safe, legal, and rare" is complete and dangerous nonsense. And Bill Clinton knew it, but I'm sure he loved the phrase. Worse, in the case of abortion, a whole new industry has developed that depends on the legality of abortion. This industry wants abortion never to be rare.
