Maryland Churches Display "721" Memorials
BY Liz Townsend
Churches in Maryland are spreading the pro-life message through displays known
as "721" memorials. The displays feature 721 crosses, representing the number of
unborn babies killed by abortion every hour of every working day in America.
The memorials, organized by Maryland Right to Life and the Knights of Columbus, have appeared in St. Mary, Charles, Prince George's, and Wicomico Counties. Already this year, 17 churches of different faith traditions, including Baptist, Presbyterian, and Catholic, have hosted the displays.
"It usually takes about 6 to 10 volunteers to put up the memorials," organizer Jim McFillin told NRL News. "They're normally left up for about a month."
In addition to the crosses, which are spread out across the church lawns, large signs are posted that read, "721 American Babies Die Every Hour by 'Choice.' Respect Life!" or "Let Us Commemorate All American Babies Who Have Died by 'Choice.' Respect Life!"
McFillin said that although a few incidents of vandalism have occurred, the displays are usually treated with respect by communities.
