Time Running Out for Workplace Giving
BY Marie Hagan
The fall months provide a great opportunity for federal employees to contribute
through the Combined Federal Campaign (CFC) to their favorite charity, which,
for many we hope, is the National Right to Life Educational Trust Fund! When you
do, your money is put to good use to spread the pro-life message through
education. But please hurry! (And don’t forget state campaigns and
private-sector involvement too!)
The CFC, created by the Office of Personnel Management about 25 years ago, takes place across the country largely on military bases and post offices, with many campaigns extending well into November. Simply ask your CFC chairperson for a brochure, if you have not already received one, and locate the National Right to Life Educational Trust Fund (#2844). We are listed alphabetically under the federation called Human Service Charities of America (HSCA).
The National Right to Life Educational Trust Fund shares CFC proceeds with its state affiliate groups’ education funds, which utilize the funds to educate their communities. Holly Gatling, executive director of South Carolina Citizens for Life, for example, recently reported, “South Carolina Citizens for Life has staffed a pro-life educational booth at the State Fair. We have reached hundreds of thousands of people with positive, accurate information about fetal development and alternatives to abortion. We use medically accurate models showing how the baby develops from one month to birth.”
But there are even more ways to use CFC-generated funds. “We give away thousands of the 10-week baby models. CFC/state donations help pay for our educational literature, 10-week models, and all the educational presentations we do around the state of South Carolina,” Gatling said. “We believe the CFC’s support has contributed to the 53 percent decline in abortion in South Carolina.”
Michele Tassart of Tennessee Right to Life reported that “workplace campaign contributions are used to continue public educational efforts affirming the dignity of human life, including educational outreach booths at more than 100 fairs and festivals throughout the state, distribution of books, videos, leaflets, and other educational resources, and the coordination of the nation’s largest pro-life oratory contest for high school students.”
All these pro-life educational endeavors and more are made
possible by your contributions through your CFC campaign.
State Campaigns
Many states also have employee campaigns. National Right to
Life currently participates in the following:
California, Colorado, Connecticut, District of Columbia, Florida, Maine,
Massachusetts, Michigan, Missouri, New Jersey, New York, North Carolina, Ohio,
Rhode Island, Utah, Vermont, Virginia, Washington, and Wisconsin.
When the campaigns are conducted varies. Just check with your state.
More and more private-sector campaigns have also emerged. Simply check at your place of employment. In both private-sector and United Way campaigns, you can always write in the name of a charity if you do not see it listed on their brochures.
