12th Annual Proudly Pro-Life Awards Dinner to be
Held April 20
By Dave Andrusko
Check your calendars. If you possibly can make it, the 12th annual Proudly Pro-Life Awards Dinner takes place April 20 at the Willard Inter-Continental Hotel in Washington, D.C.
For those new to the Movement, the Proudly Pro-Life Awards Dinner is that magically special night in which the National Right to Life Educational Trust Fund honors leaders in the right to life movement. This year's distinguished honorees are Richard and Helen DeVos and the Most Reverend Charles Chaput, O.F.M.
The DeVoses, both individually and through the Richard and Helen DeVos Foundation, have been a force behind pro-life gains in America in recent years. The DeVoses have made unborn children a major focus of their philanthropy. The Movement and our nation are stronger, and many children are alive today, because of their deep dedication and generosity to the cause of life.
Both have earned honorary doctorate degrees and have received awards for their humanitarian service from many organizations.
One of the leading clerical voices in defense of unborn children, the Most Reverend Charles Chaput is the Archbishop of Denver. His unflinching advocacy for the unborn has inspired many clergy and laity to speak out in defense of life.
His op-ed in the New York Times last October drew much comment. He stated unequivocally that Catholics "see abortion as a matter of civil rights and human dignity, not simply as a matter of religious teaching. We are doubly unfaithful - - both to our religious convictions and to our democratic responsibility - - if we fail to support the right to life of the unborn child."
The Reverend Chaput is currently Chancellor of Our Lady of the New Advent Theological Institute and of St. John Vianney Theological Seminary.
The NRL Educational Trust Fund is proud to announce that Ben Stein will once again be the Master of Ceremonies.
The roster of honorees reads like a "who's who" of the Movement. Previous recipients include Pat Boone, Archbishop Renato Martino, Dr. James Dobson, Mrs. Arthur DeMoss, John Cardinal O'Connor, Gov. Robert Casey, Congressman Henry Hyde, Senator Bob Smith, Congressman Christopher Smith and Congressman Charles Canady, Judge Robert Bork, Mr. Virgil Dechant of the Knights of Columbus, Senator Jesse Helms, Mr. Wellington Mara of the New York Football Giants, Mr. Thomas S. Monaghan, and Bishop James T. McHugh, Mr. Lawrence Garvey, and Fr. Frank Pavone.
The Trust Fund has also paid special tribute to Pope John Paul II, Mother Teresa, and President Ronald Reagan.
