Opponents back Feinstein "single-victim substitute" Showdown Near in U.S. Senate on Unborn Victims of Crimes
WASHINGTON (March 7, 2004) - - A long-awaited showdown is expected in the U.S. Senate within a matter of weeks on whether unborn children who are injured or killed during federal crimes will be recognized as victims. On February 26, the House of Representatives passed the NRLC-backed Unborn Victims of Violence Act (H.R. 1997), also known as "Laci and Conner's Law," by a vote of 254-163. Immediately following the vote, President Bush said, "Pregnant women who have been harmed by violence, and their families, know that there are two victims - - the mother and the unborn child - - and both victims should be protected by federal law. Ten Democrats, pro-abortion one and all, entered the race to secure their party's presidential nomination. When pro-abortion Sen. John Edwards withdrew March 3, the winner was pro-abortion Massachusetts Senator John Kerry. Kerry will be a formidable opponent. When Kerry faces pro-life President George W. Bush in November, the position these two candidates have taken on abortion couldn't be more different. Let me list just some. President Bush supports legal protection for unborn children and opposes abortion on demand. Senator Kerry supports Roe v. Wade, the Supreme Court decision that legalized abortion for any reason, even as a method of birth control. PAGE 1

KERRYING WATER John Kerry was raised in the Catholic faith and continues to be an active member of the Catholic church [sic]. --John Kerry for President web site (johnkerry.com) Advisers to one Democratic candidate circulated a newspaper article in Missouri that said Kerry personally opposed abortion [emphasis added] "as an article of faith" because he is required to do so as a Catholic. Kerry added that a lawmaker should not "legislate his personal beliefs," according to a transcript of the interview with Missouri reporters, but that was not included in the published story. --Patrick Healy, Boston Globe, 1/30/2004 John Kerry believes [emphasis added] that women have the right to control their own bodies, their own lives, and their destiny. He believes [emphasis added] that the Constitution protects their right to choose and make their own decisions in consultation with their doctor, their conscience, and their God. He will defend this right as President. And never in my years in the Senate have the rights of women been at such risk, never have women been assaulted in their citizenship here at home and in their womanhood around the globe as they have been by this administration. NARAL is without question the front line defense, and when judgments are made, the judgment is inescapable that Kate Michelman is one of the most effective and important civil rights leaders in our time. As I said 18 years ago in the first speech I ever gave on the floor of the U.S. Senate, my so-called maiden speech, the right to choose is a fundamental right. So we have to make it clear that we are not going to turn back the clock. There is no overturning Roe v. Wade; there is no packing the courts with judges who will be hostile to choice [translation: no judges who respect the Constitution and don't legislate from the bench]; there is no denial of choice for poor women in the United States of America [translation: abortions paid with your tax dollars]; there is no outlawing of a procedure necessary to save a woman's life or health [code words for the partial-birth abortion procedure]; and there are no more cutbacks on population control efforts around the world [translation: promoting abortion as "population control"].
