31 Years of Hard Work Pays Off

Pro-life President George W. Bush has been a stalwart ally in his first term.

Thirty-one years ago on January 22, 1973, the pro-abortionists celebrated their complete and final victory - - or so they thought. The Supreme Court had settled the abortion question once and for all. It had struck down every protective abortion law in the country, and it looked inevitable that the lives of other vulnerable persons would be in imminent danger as well.
But then something began to happen. Out of that terrible tragedy, the right to life movement rose like a phoenix. National Right to Life, which Congressman Henry Hyde calls the "flagship" of that movement, was organized almost immediately and was officially launched in May 1973.
Now, 31 years later, National Right to Life is one of the most effective and respected organizations in the nation. In 1999 Fortune magazine ranked the most influential public policy groups in Washington, D.C., and National Right to Life was No. 8. NARAL, the leading pro-abortion group, ranked a distant 43rd.

The race is on!

As I write this story, it is only a little over a week before the first caucus in Iowa and two weeks before the first primary in New Hampshire. Collectively, the results of caucuses and primaries over the next couple of months will determine which pro-abortion Democrat will face pro-life President George W. Bush in November. Congressional primaries to select party nominees for the U.S. House and Senate begin in March.
Since the 2000 election, pro-lifers have enjoyed the wonderful experience of having a pro-life president in the White House. Since the 2002 elections, there has also been pro-life leadership in both the U.S. House of Representatives and the U.S. Senate.
However, that could all change, depending on the outcome of this year's election.

2004 IS A PIVOTAL YEAR

I will remain in this position [as NARAL president] through the end of April 2004 so that I can work with our members and allies to lead the March for Freedom of Choice that will bring a historic number of pro-choice Americans to Washington, D.C.
My retirement from NARAL Pro-Choice America does not mean I am withdrawing from pro-choice activism. Quite the contrary: I will now be able to devote myself fully to the most pressing challenge our movement faces today: electing a pro-choice President in 2004. The next four years will almost certainly see at least two Supreme Court vacancies. If George W. Bush is allowed to fill those seats, it could mean the end of reproductive privacy and the end of Roe v. Wade. I intend to do everything I can do to see that does not happen.
NARAL Pro-Choice America's true impact is measured not in dollars raised, elections won or [judicial] nominations defeated, but in the countless women whose lives have been saved and children whose lives have been enriched by our work.
