· Between one million and two million families would like to adopt children.
· There are waiting lists of families ready to adopt children with medical problems.
· You can choose adoptive parents for your child. Adoption agencies also carefully screen prospective parents.
· Adoptive parents will often pay for your health care and your child's during pregnancy and delivery.
· Studies of adopted children indicate that adopted children generally do better in school, have higher self-esteem, live in more stable and economically advantaged families, and are less prone to behavior problems than other children.
Different Adoption Plans:
Traditional/Closed: No identifying information is exchanged
between the birth family and the adoptive parents and child. State laws provide
confidential methods for contact to be attempted later on if all parties agree.
Confidential/Mediated/Semi-Open:
Through an intermediary, the birth family and adoptive family may share information and
contact each other if they desire.
Fully Disclosed/Open: The birth family and adoptive family share identifying
information and usually meet in the process of arranging the adoption. The two families
may keep in touch throughout the adopted child's life.
