U.S. Senate Says No to Abortion on Military Bases, 51-48

Shown below is the May 22, 2003, roll call by which the U.S. Senate refused to adopt an amendment to authorize the performance of abortion on demand at U.S. military facilities.

Military medical facilities serve U.S. uniformed personnel and their dependents. Current law prohibits abortions (including privately funded abortions) from being performed in these facilities, whether overseas or within the United States, except to save the life of the mother, or in cases of rape or incest.

During consideration of the Fiscal Year 2004 Defense Authorization bill (S. 1050), Senators Patty Murray (D-Wa.) and Olympia Snowe (R-Me.) offered an amendment to repeal this pro-life law. NRLC opposed the Murray- Snowe Amendment, and the amendment failed, 48 to 51 (Roll Call No. 192).

On the same day, the House of Representatives also rejected an amendment to repeal the ban on performance of abortions in overseas military medical facilities (see roll call, pages 24-25).
