U.S. House Passes Ban on Partial-Birth Abortion, 274-151 Will the Senate's Democratic Leaders Kill the Ban?

WASHINGTON (August 6, 2002) - - With strong support from President Bush, the U.S. House of Representatives has passed NRLC-backed legislation to place a national ban on partial-birth abortions. The fate of the bill will now be decided by the Democratic leadership of the U.S. Senate.

The House approved the Partial-Birth Abortion Ban Act (H.R. 4965) by a bipartisan vote of 274-151 on July 24. The measure is sponsored by Congressman Steve Chabot (pronounced "SHA-bit") (R-Ohio), and in the Senate by Senator Rick Santorum (R-Pa.).

PITTSBURGH (August 5, 2002) - - At a ceremony in Pittsburgh attended by NRLC officials and other pro-life advocates, President Bush signed into law the Born-Alive Infants Protection Act, a bill strongly backed by NRLC.

The law guarantees that every infant born alive enjoys full legal rights under federal law, regardless of his or her stage of development or whether the live birth occurred during an abortion.

"This important legislation ensures that every infant born alive - - including an infant who survives an abortion procedure - - is considered a person under federal law," the President said before signing the bill.

The Truth Is:
Abortion Hurts Women

We know that the culture of abortion in America is built on lies. One of the cruelest and most damaging of these is that "abortion is safer than childbirth." This is one of the basic claims and assumptions of the abortion culture, so any evidence that abortion harms women must be suppressed by abortion supporters.

It is clear from polling data that many Americans are uncomfortable with the idea of abortion, yet feel they must accept it because they believe it to be necessary for the health and well-being of women. If pro-lifers could show this ambivalent group of Americans that abortion, in addition to killing babies, also damages women, we would go a long way toward exposing the lies of the abortion culture and undermining the position of those who consider themselves to be "pro-choice."
