No Federal Drugs to Assist Suicide, Ashcroft Rules

In response to Ashcroft's ruling, a presidential spokesman said Mr. Bush "has consistently said that he opposes physician-assisted suicide and he believes it is the proper role of the federal government to regulate controlled substances such as narcotics or other dangerous drugs."

The Bush Administration moved decisively to end federal support for euthanasia November 6 when Attorney General John Ashcroft announced that federally controlled drugs can no longer be used to assist suicide, a practice that had been permitted by the Clinton-Gore Administration in the state of Oregon.
The next day Oregon, joined by some doctors who have offered lethal prescriptions and other euthanasia proponents, filed suit in federal court in an effort to require that federally controlled drugs remain available to kill terminally ill patients.
However, public support for the position taken by the Bush Administration is strong. By 67% to 29%, Americans say federal law should not allow the use of federally controlled narcotics and other dangerous drugs for the purpose of assisted suicide and euthanasia. Determined that National Right to Life would not allow a proposed doubling of its rent to slash crucially important educational programs, the NRL Educational Trust Fund has purchased a building just three blocks from its current location halfway between the White House and Capitol Hill.
NRLC will rent space for legislative and lobbying activities from the NRL Educational Trust Fund and thus all of the funds that previously went to rent will go to pro-life activities.
"We simply refused to cut our educational outreach in order to pay an additional $200,000 in rent," said Executive Director David N. O'Steen, Ph.D. "Ask anyone in public policy circles here in Washington - - we are legendary for being frugal with the money sent us by grassroots pro-lifers."

HAS EVERYTHING CHANGED?

As we are coming to grips with the events of September 11, we often hear that "everything has changed" that we have a new appreciation of what is important and what is not; that, after such horror, we have a clearer perception of right and wrong.

We have come face to face with willful evil, and its very existence has shocked us. Temporarily at least, moral relativism has lost much of its false appeal. And being "non-judgmental" in view of the atrocities appears plainly absurd.

People can and do act in evil ways. With the temptation to do evil comes the diabolically inspired hope that we become defiantly powerful when we follow the temptation. Beyond any immediate pleasure and short-term gain, it is the promise of acting with power that makes evil so tempting, especially "big" evil. Being able to consider other people not just mere mortals but mere things; being master over life and death; defying God Himself by destroying those made in His image, by the thousands-- that is the intoxication born of doing evil on a grand scale.
