REDBOOK MAGAZINE
TO EXPRESS YOUR THANKS
The Feminist Majority, a major player in the effort to bring RU486 to the U.S., has launched an online petition drive against Redbook Magazine for refusing to carry an advertisement by the National Abortion Federation promoting the abortion pill. Several other magazines, among them, People, Vanity Fair, Cosmopolitan, Self, Jane, Mademoiselle, Glamour, Fitness, Health, First for Women, and Essence, have agreed to run the ad sometime in the coming summer or fall. Redbook refused, saying the magazine wanted to avoid "negative reader and retailer reaction" (Wall Street Journal, May 23, 2001).
We think Redbook should be commended, not condemned, for its decision not to carry the ad for RU486. Contact Redbook and tell it you appreciate its decision not to promote this pill, which kills unborn children and endangers their mothers.
With the Feminist Majority's petition, Redbook will be under a lot of pressure to change its decision and carry the ad. Your letter of encouragement will help give the magazine confidence that the decision they made to refuse the ad was the right one.
