Single-Issue Voting

By Jacki Ragan

I recently received an e-mail from a "pro-life" individual whom I didn't know, but who was responding to an article that had been widely circulated written by Dr. James Lamb regarding the Christian obligation for this election. (Dr. Lamb's great article can be found on page 10 of this issue.)

This pro-life individual admitted that abortion is wrong, but argued that the deliberate destruction of unborn children is no more wrong than poverty, a poor education, etc. The individual's response ended by saying that he/she was a strong supporter of Birthright, but that "abortion has no monopoly on atrocities," implying that abortion was no more an election issue than any other social issue.

Frankly, I don't understand the supposed "stigma" about single-issue voting. Americans have voted single issue for hundreds of years. Many do today on a whole range of issues.

Speaking for myself, I simply could never vote for a person who is willing to accept that the unborn child is a human being, i.e. a "baby," if a mother wants the child and a blob of tissue to be legally destroyed and disposed of if she doesn't.

I could never support a person who believes partial-birth abortion is necessary and should be legal in our country. I could never support a person who believes that the killing of over a million innocent human beings should remain legal in America.

Never be intimidated, never be browbeaten. When you make a candidate's stand on abortion the issue on which you decide your vote, you are participating in a honored tradition and making the difference for countless unborn babies who have no voice but yours.
