Pays Tribute to the Late John
Cardinal O'Connor; Archbishop Egan Installed in N.Y. City
Arlington, Virginia--John Cardinal O'Connor,
who died of cancer on May 3, was honored during the opening session of the 27th
annual NRL Convention for his outstanding leadership and commitment to the
pro-life movement. The tribute included a video reviewing a variety of scenes
and words of Cardinal O 'Connor over the years.
During his entire priestly life, Cardinal O'Connor was totally committed to the
protection of innocent human life. As Archbishop of New York, he continually
challenged political leaders and the media to support public policies that would
restore legal protection to the unborn and ensure protection of the disabled and
medically dependent.
Despite his extremely busy schedule, Cardinal O'Connor made himself available to
pro-life leaders. He listened to our concerns and always offered candid insights
about the problems facing the movement.
The video tribute to Cardinal O'Connor was produced by Ernest Ohlhoff, NRLC's
director of outreach. A limited number of videos are available. For information
please call Kathleen Sweeney in the Outreach Department at (202) 626-8800, ext.

On June 19 Archbishop Edward M. Egan succeeded O'Connor. He is the 12th
Archbishop of New York. Prior to his appointment to New York, he served for 12
years as the bishop of Bridgeport, Connecticut.
During his remarks at his installation Mass at St. Patrick's Cathedral,
Archbishop Egan received applause when he made reference to abortion. Catholics
could not stand idly by, he said, while a "being" that no one can
prove is "other than human being with an unalienable right to live"
was killed in the womb.
A native of Illinois, Archbishop Egan was ordained a priest in 1957 and
consecrated bishop in 1985. Previous to his appointment to Bridgeport, he served
as auxiliary bishop and vicar for education in the Archdiocese of New York.
