Highlights from Planned Parenthood's 1998-99 Annual
Report
Record Number of Abortions - While the number of abortions performed in the U.S. has dropped in recent years, the number of abortions performed at Planned Parenthood clinics in 1998 was the highest number ever recorded for the organization, according to its latest annual report. In 1998, Planned Parenthood clinics performed 167,928 abortions and referred for 36,870 more. They are responsible for more than one out of every seven abortions in the United States.
Abortion vs. Prenatal Care - According to figures reported in Planned Parenthood's 1998-99 Annual Report, 80% of abortion clients receive their care at Planned Parenthood facilities, while 80% of prenatal clients have to be referred elsewhere. Planned Parenthood saw 16,065 prenatal clients in 1998, compared to 167,928 abortion clients. In other words there were more than nine abortions for every client given prenatal care.
Adoption Not Much of an Option - In 1998, abortions at Planned Parenthood outnumbered adoption referrals (4,892) by a 34 to 1.
Humanitarian Aid? Under the heading "Responding to the Crisis in Kosovo," Planned Parenthood highlights the $54,000 given by its affiliates to the relief effort. It adds that "[t]hese donations funded, among other things, the expenses of two affiliate health care professionals who went to Albania to provide abortion training for health care workers serving refugees."
Funded by Taxpayer Dollars Planned Parenthood indicates it received $211 million, or 27% of its total income, from " government grants and contracts" in its 1998-1999 fiscal year.
