60 Senators Can Stop It

In Oregon, state law has legalized the killing of those who are "incurable" through physician-assisted suicide. They may be killed if their condition, untreated, will produce death within six months--even if, with treatment, they could live indefinitely. Those publicly reported to have been legally killed have two things in common: the predominant reason for their death was fear of future disability, and they were all killed by federally controlled drugs.In October 1999, the U.S. House passed by 271 to 156 a bill that would stop this abuse of federally controlled drugs to kill patients, while promoting the positive alternative of pain relief. Whether it passes the U.S. Senate largely depends on whether 60 of the 100 senators will vote for "cloture" to stop a filibuster threatened by Senators Ted Kennedy (D-Ma.) and Ron Wyden (D-Or.).

Write your U.S. senators to ask them 1) to CO-SPONSOR* the Pain Relief Promotion Act to stop killing patients with federally controlled drugs, and 2) to promise to vote for cloture to permit a vote on the Pain Relief Promotion Act.
