U.S. House Again Votes To Block RU 486 Approval
WASHINGTON For the second time, the U.S. House of Representatives has voted to prohibit the Food and Drug Administration from granting approval for drugs "for the chemical inducement of abortion," such as the RU 486 abortion pill.
This came through June 8 House approval, by a razor-thin margin of 217 to 214, of an NRLC-backed amendment offered by pro-life Congressman Tom Coburn (R-Ok.) to the agriculture appropriations bill.
The House approved an identical amendment in June, 1998, but it did not receive Senate approval, and was dropped by a House-Senate conference committee. This year's version again faces great obstacles in the Senate and in the opposition of the Clinton-Gore Administration, which has blocked several other pro-life initiatives with vetoes.
A more detailed report on the issue, and the complete House roll call, will appear in the next edition of National Right to Life News.
