"There Is Still Time . . .
But the Clock Is Ticking . . ."

By Jacki Ragan
Convention Director

I would like to personally take this opportunity to invite you to join with National Right to Life as we commemorate 25 years of work on behalf of unborn children. Pro-life leaders from across the nation and abroad, along with countless grassroots pro-lifers, will gather in Orlando, Florida, June 18, 19, and 20, 1998, for the annual National Right to Life Convention (NRLC '98).

If you have not yet registered for the pro-life educational event of the year, we have extended the "early registration" deadline to June 3. We did this because we believe it is important for YOU to be there. In fact, we believe it is one of the most important things you can do to benefit your state organization, your chapter, your church, and the right to life movement in general.

NRLC '98 is housed at the Hyatt Regency International Airport, a four-star, four-diamond hotel, located in the main terminal of the airport, and it is like nothing you have ever seen. You won't need a taxi cab or a shuttle when you arrive at the airport - - just follow the signs for the Hyatt. The room block reserved for NRLC '98 will be released on May 24, 1998. Reservations made after that date may not receive the special room rate. Call 407-825-1234 to reserve your room(s) at the special flat rate for NRLC '98 attendees of $105. Up to four persons can stay in the room for this rate. Make sure you mention the convention when you reserve your room.

NRLC '98 is three full days (and I do mean full!) of learning the latest information available on pro-life issues; meeting and talking with pro-life leaders and grassroots activists from across the nation and abroad; sharing successes and failures; finding out "how someone else made it work"; and simply learning that we don't have to re-invent the wheel at every turn. It is an educational fellowship gathering of folks who work and share the conviction that innocent human life must be protected!

NLRC '98 will host a special convention track for youth - - both college and teens, offering three full days of sessions planned especially for them. For adults, it will offer four general sessions, fifty-four workshops, the latest pro-life videos, exhibits, childcare for younger children, a Prayer Breakfast, closing Banquet, plus the chance to make new friends and renew old acquaintances. It provides an excellent opportunity to discuss challenges, celebrate victories, and learn from one another.

The convention officially opens on Thursday morning, June 18, for a 10:00 a.m. general session featuring NRLC President Dr. Wanda Franz and Dr. Jean Garton, renowned author and lecturer best known to pro-lifers for her classic book, Who Broke the Baby?, which has been revised for the 25th anniversary of Roe v. Wade. A co-founder of Lutherans for Life, she is a dynamic spokes-person for the right to life movement. You won't want to miss this session.

Your choice of 18 different workshop sessions will fill the afternoon as well as over 25 pro-life exhibits and many special pro-life videos. Two all-time favorites of NRLC convention goers - - editorial cartoonists Chuck Asay and Steve Benson - - will be the featured speakers at the Thursday evening general session. If you have never attended one of their hilarious presentations, you are in for a special treat! If you have, I know you won't miss this dynamic duo.

Friday morning begins early with the annual Prayer Breakfast ($15 ticket required) featuring keynote speaker Reverend Peter Marshall. Rev. Marshall is a minister who has gained national recognition as an evangelist and teacher. A noted author, Reverend Marshall is the son of Dr. Peter Marshall, the chaplain of the U.S. Senate from 1947 to 1949, and Catherine Marshall LeSourd, author of many bestselling books.

The remainder of Friday is filled with more workshops, videos, exhibits, and a general session discussing the growing threat and reality of "Assisting Suicide." On Friday, the convention day ends at 6:00 p.m. so that you can either relax in your room or take in some of Orlando's many activities during the evening.

Saturday morning is another early day, beginning with workshops at 9:00 a.m. and a general session during the afternoon.

The National Right to Life Oratory Contest also takes place Saturday afternoon and the winner will give his or her speech at the closing Banquet Saturday evening. Church services (Catholic and Protestant) will be held on Saturday at 5:00 p.m. for your convenience.

The closing Banquet ($35 ticket required) begins at 8:00 p.m. with Mr. Ben Stein as the keynote speaker. A courageous and often lonely voice in Hollywood, Mr. Stein stands firmly for life and is an eloquent spokesperson for unborn children. Well known for his character acting roles in the movie Ferris Bueller's Day Off and a long-running part in the series The Wonder Years, he has most recently seen a great deal of success as the host of his own game show on Comedy Central, Win Ben Stein's Money.

As this description illustrates, we try to have something for everyone at the National Right to Life Convention. If you have never attended a convention, this year would make an excellent first. If you have attended past conventions, we urge you to join us in Orlando for this exciting line-up of first-rate speakers and sessions. We will do our best to make you glad you made the effort to attend NRLC '98.

I hope to see you in Orlando.
