Mary Ann Glendon received the Proudly Pro-Life Award on October 6, 2009

A dark cloud seemed to hang over the lives of the unborn this May 17th when pro-abortion President Barack Obama was awarded an honorary degree at the commencement ceremony of the University of Notre Dame. But the actions of some true pro-life champions shed a powerful light of hope for the unborn.

Foremost among those pro-life champions was Ambassador Mary Ann Glendon, an attorney, lecturer, writer, and Harvard Law Professor, whose actions inspired all of those who believe in the fundamental right to life of the unborn and vulnerable.

Ambassador Glendon, who served as the Ambassador to the Vatican under pro-life President George W. Bush, was chosen by Notre Dame to receive its very prestigious Laetare Medal at the same commencement ceremony where Barack Obama was to receive an honorary degree. When she learned of the decision to honor Obama and realized the contradiction inherent between the actions of Notre Dame and the life-affirming principles of her Catholic faith, she notified the college with a courteous, but firm letter that she was no longer able to accept the Laetare Medal or speak at the commencement ceremony. Her courageous and principled decision made her the heroine of the controversy and provided a strong counter-example to the moral drift epitomized by President Obama’s speech.

Because of her stirring example, inspiring leadership, and long-time devotion to the protection of innocent human life, National Right to Life will honor Ambassador Glendon with this year’s Proudly Pro-Life Award. This Award has been previously received by, among others, Cong. Henry J. Hyde, John Cardinal O’Connor, and Gov. Bob Casey, and is awarded to those leaders who have made profound contributions in the defense of unborn children.

Ambassador Glendon received her award at the Proudly Pro-Life Awards Dinner on Oct. 6 at the Waldorf=Astoria Hotel in New York City. The Proudly Pro-Life Awards Dinner benefits the National Right to Life Educational Trust Fund‘s invaluable work educating the American people to the danger and harm of abortion, physician-assisted suicide, and euthanasia. We’d like to offer you the chance to participate by making a contribution in Amb. Glendon's honor to the National Right to Life Educational Trust Fund. We know she, and the people whose lives are saved by your generosity, will appreciate your kindness and your gift will stand as a tribute to her uncommon courage and unwavering commitment on behalf of the lives of those we work to protect.
