Pro-Life Bush Wraps Up Republican Presidential Nomination;
Will Face Pro-Abortion Al Gore in November

George W. Bush and wife, Laura

BUSH, GORE HEADED FOR NOVEMBER SHOWDOWN

Pro-life Texas Gov. George W. Bush has said on many occasions that his goal is that "the unborn ought to be protected in law and welcomed to life." Pro-abortion Vice President Al Gore says "rest assured that a Supreme Court majority appointed in a Gore administration would support a woman's right to choose."

By Carol Tobias, NRL PAC Director

After months of preliminaries, the November presidential matchup is now set. Pro-life Texas Gov. George W. Bush will face off against pro-abortion Vice President Al Gore in a contest universally viewed as likely to be intense, arduous, and very close.

Gov. Bush fended off a tough challenge from Arizona Senator John McCain. The nomination fight turned with Mr. Bush's near-sweep of Republican primaries held on "Super Tuesday," March 7.

Status of Major Pro-Life Legislation in Congress

WASHINGTON (March 15) The U.S. House and U.S. Senate are poised to consider several major pieces of pro-life legislation during the months immediately ahead. What follows is a summary of the current status of some major right-to-life issues in Congress.

Partial-Birth Abortion
The Partial-Birth Abortion Ban Act was originally introduced in June, 1995, by Congressman Charles Canady (R-Fl.). The bill would place a national ban on partial-birth abortions, except to save the life of the mother. President Clinton has twice vetoed the bill, and his vetoes have twice been sustained in the Senate, most recently in September, 1998.

From the President

Wanda Franz, Ph.D.

THE SCORE ON AL GORE

* I don't believe a woman's freedom to live her own life, in all cases, outweighs the fetus's right to life.

Al Gore quoted in the Nashville Banner, 7/29/76*

* I have strongly opposed federal funding of abortions. In my opinion, it is wrong to spend federal funds for what is arguably the taking of a human life. It is my deep personal conviction that abortion is wrong. Let me assure you that I share your belief that innocent life must be protected and I have an open mind on how to further this goal.

Al Gore in a letter to a constituent, 8/22/1984. (In NRLC files.)
