Are You Keeping Track of the Mid-Term
Elections?
Part One of FourBy Dave
Andrusko
Good evening, and thanks for taking
time out from your busy schedule to read Today's News & Views.
Part Two is a chilling reminder of how far
and how fast suicide is moving in Switzerland.
Part Three recapitulates a debate that included Prof. John Finnis.
Part Four updates you on another challenge
to free speech. Over at National Right to Life News Today (www.nationalrighttolifenews.org),
Wesley Smith writes about the right of patients to have their medical wishes
honored. Liz Townsend tells us about more PPFA mischief, this time in Utah.
Luis Zaffirini exposes an abortion campaign that targets Hispanic women, and
I write a piece about infanticide, which, alas, never goes away. Please send

You
can tell we are six days out from the November 2nd mid-term elections by the
heavy traffic at Today's News & Views and National Right to Life News Today.
Obviously pro-lifers are busy at work on the eve of elections that will set
the tone not only for the next two years, but also for 2012 and beyond. As
always, there is so much to digest, I will offer summary bullet points.
* There are some lame attempts to
minimize the importance , but nothing can change one of THE fundamental
underlying dynamics of 2010: Republicans are miles ahead in enthusiasm. Or,
at USA Today headlined its account, "Poll: GOP voters far more fired up than
Democrats." The record-setting gap is a whopping 26%! "Despite
across-the-country rallies by President Obama and get-out-the-vote efforts
by his allies, only 37% of Democrats and Democratic-leaning registered
voters report more enthusiasm than usual about voting, a decline from early
in the year," writes Susan Page. "Meanwhile 63% of Republicans and
Republican-leaning registered voters say they are more enthusiastic than
usual, the biggest advantage for either party on this key measure in any
midterm election since Gallup began asking the question in 1994. Then,
Republicans had a 9-point enthusiasm advantage in a year Democrats lost
control of the U.S. House and Senate."
* There is a reason that in many parts
of the country the only image of Obama you see is on a milk carton. His
popularity has dropped to an almost unimaginable level. "Currently,
two-thirds of Americans (67%) have a negative opinion of the job President
Obama is doing while just over one-third (37%) have a positive opinion,"
according to the Harris Poll, which always gins up numbers for Democrats.
"This continues the president's downward trend and he is now at the lowest
job approval rating of his presidency." Gannett's Chuck Raasch writes, "A
recent Quinnipiac poll of Ohio voters indicated that, by 32 to 9 percentage
points, they would be less likely rather than more likely to vote for a
Democrat if Obama campaigned for that candidate. Among independent voters,
that broke a stunning 35 to 4 against Obama" (emphasis added).
* The advantage Republicans enjoy on
the "generic congressional ballot" (where no candidate's name appears and
the respondent is asked what party they would vote for) is staggering.
According to Gallup, if you take the high turnout scenario (more than 40% of
the electorate), the GOP leads by 9 points--52% to 43%. That soars to 14%
(55% to 41%), if the turnout is under 40%.
* Yesterday I wrote about just a few
of the pro-abortion Democrats' dirty tricks. News today out of Fox5Vegas.com
that voters trying to vote for pro-life Sharron Angle "are complaining that
Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid's name was already checked when they went
to cast their ballots" in early voting Monday. "'Something's not right,'
voter Joyce Ferrara told the network, saying several people reported the
same problem. 'One person that's a fluke. Two, that's strange. But several
within a five-minute period of time -- that's wrong.'"
I think you get the picture.
I hope you've helped those pro-lifers
who might need assistance to vote early (where states allow). You can find
