"The Fight for the Right to Life is a People's Fight for its Existence and its Continuity"
Part Three of Four

Editor's note. The following is the Introduction Dr. Mildred Fay Jefferson wrote for the 1977 National Right to Life Convention book. Dr. Jefferson, who passed away Sunday, served as NRLC President from 1975-1978.

Dear Friend For Life:

We come together from all parts of our land - we who are known as the right-to-life people. We come rich and poor, proud and plain, religious and agnostic, politically committed and independent. We can agree only on our respect for life and our determination to defend the right to life.
The fight for the right to life is a people's fight for its existence and its continuity. It is a country's fight for its survival and its future. The right-to-life cause is not the concern of only a special few but it should be the cause of all those who care about fairness and justice, love and compassion and liberty with law.

Why does America and the world need the National Right to Life Committee? Because the millions of people in the right-to-life movement can be ignored if they cannot make their will felt by their elected representatives. The people affect the democratic process by controlling the political process. Political control depends on sound organization. The National Right to Life Committee is the only national right-to-life organization which provides for organizational representation of affiliates in all fifty states and the District of Columbia. We are the only one of our kind.

Our objective is to establish the protection of life as the absolute priority of our society. Our corporate obligation is to promote respect for the worth and dignity of all human life, including the life of the unborn child from the moment of conception and to promote, encourage and sponsor such amendatory and statutory measures which will provide protection for human life. before and after birth, particularly for the defenseless, the incompetent, the impaired and the incapacitated.

We are speaking for those who cannot speak for themselves; defending those who cannot defend themselves and fighting for those who cannot fight for themselves. We will win the baffle for life because we must. But when we win, that victory will not be for ourselves - but for America, the world and all mankind.

For life and for love,
MILDRED F. JEFFERSON, M.D.
President, The National Right To life Committee, Inc.
