Pro-Life Democrats and ObamaCare
Part Three of Three

By Dave Andrusko

As they say better late than never--and never assume! A friend who follows politics pretty closely contacted me earlier this week to ask if pro-lifers would be supporting erstwhile pro-life Democrats who--by voting for ObamaCare--had folded when they were most needed.

I had to smile to myself, wondering how he'd missed our many responses. I sent along some of the umpteen blog entries we've written that demonstrate how seriously pro-lifers took the eleventh hour treachery of those Democrats who had voted pro-life previously but whose support carried ObamaCare over the goal line.

Some Obamacare apologists have argued that these Democrats ought not to be opposed by pro-lifers because they "endors[ed] an executive order that barred federal funding of abortions."

But the point that NRLC made abundantly clear was that Obama's Executive Order was extremely limited and completely inadequate to prevent the health care law from producing future pro-abortion federal subsidies and administrative decrees. Recent developments have further validated the NRLC analysis. (See, for example, www.nrlc.org/press_releases_new/Release072910.html.)

There was no excuse to vote for ObamaCare if you were serious about preventing the greatest expansion of abortion since Roe v. Wade. As NRLC Legislative Director Douglas Johnson put it, "Lawmakers who voted for the gravely flawed bill must be held accountable, because we warned them that it left numerous doors open for federal subsidies for abortion."

Come November 2 a number of Democrats with prior pro-life voting records who buckled last March will answer to their constituents. But it is also true that pro-life Democrats who opposed ObamaCare and remained 100% pro-life have shown themselves worthy of the title pro-life.
