About those "Idiot Boards"
Part Two of Three
By Dave Andrusko
It's amazing what you can
learn watching CNN on the tread mill at the local gym. Just as I
was trying my best to persuade my ancient body to move in a
slightly upwards direction, former Vice President Walter Mondale
appeared on Wolf Blitzer's "Situation Room" program.
I once wrote about the
2002 debate he had with Republican Norm Coleman. Mondale had
been drafted to run at the last minute after the incumbent
Democratic senator was tragically killed in a plane crash. (http://www.nrlc.org/news/2002/NRL11/edita.html).
Outmatched and ill-prepared, it was a very sad ending to a
career that extended back decades, including an overwhelming
loss in 1984 to Ronald Reagan.
They don't come much more
partisan than "Fritz" Mondale. So when he critiqued fellow
pro-abortion Democrat President Barack Obama for his reliance on
the "idiot boards" (the TelePrompter], you know Mondale must be
as exasperated as the rest of us are by the President's
annoying-beyond-words practice.
Mondale's preliminary
point was actually absolutely on the money. When your head is
bobbing like a metronome, first to the right and then to left,
the entire audience knows you are playing to the camera, not to
them. They--we--are just props.
The consequence of Obama's
reliance on the TelePromoter, according to Mondale, is, "I think
he loses the connection that he needs emotionally with American
voters."
True, as far as it goes.
However the real reason President Obama is experiencing severe
disconnect with the electorate is not because he is one cold
fish--unhelpful but not crucial-- but because the electorate has
seen (if not him) his policies up close and personal.
They see him not for how
he campaigned as a candidate--the affable healer/reconciler--but
for how he has governed as President--the divider whose vision
of America increasingly rubs the mainstream the wrong way.
If you are a Democrat
running in a hostile political environment, you'd like this only
to affect Obama's re-election prospects, not your own chances of
returning to Washington, D.C. But as we discuss in Part Three,
in voting for ObamaCare they hitched their electoral wagon to
Obama's fatally flawed plan.
