Abortionist Leroy Carhart |
Abortionist LeRoy Carhart
has told local Nebraska media that he is opening three new
abortion clinics because of the state's new "Pain-Capable Unborn
Child Protection Act" [L.B. 1130]. All the more reason to
pass similar bills in Maryland, Iowa, and Indiana, where Carhart
says he is opening the "Carhart Centers for Sexual and
Reproductive Health."
Carhart is wasting no
time. "Carhart said the first new clinic will open Dec. 6 in
suburban Maryland, near the U.S. capital," according to Chicago
Tribune. "He said the second would be in Council Bluffs, Iowa,
just across the Missouri River from Omaha. The third would be in
Indianapolis, he said, replacing services of an existing
clinic."
Carhart is [in]famous for
performing late, late abortions--into and beyond the second
trimester. He told KETV that, "We need a place where we can help
out patients, without the harassment of the courts." Referring
to the new law and his out-of-state moves, Carhart told the
Omaha World Herald, "This sort of forced us. We had to do it."
Julie Schmit-Albin is
executive director of Nebraska Right to Life and along with Mary
Spaulding Balch, NRLC Director of State Legislation, was
primarily responsible for passage of LB 1103.
She said that the
out-of-state expansion shows the strength of Nebraska's new law.
"This shows that LB 1103 was the right strategy," she told
Today's News & Views. "It's interesting to us that Carhart
needed to expand to three other states to replace the over 1,000
abortions he did every year in Nebraska."
Schmit-Albin told the
World Herald, "The bulk of his business has been late-term
abortions," adding, "Why else does he need three new places in
three states to be flying around doing abortions, those
abortions that can't be done in Nebraska?"
According to KETV, "Carhart
said private donations are paying the cost to open the three
clinics, estimated to be about $1.5 million."
Ever since the law was
passed in May there have been rumors and hints that
pro-abortionists would challenge the law in court. There was a
five-month time period before LB 1130 went into effect, but the
law was never challenged.
Carhart has twice carried
legal challenges all the way to the Supreme Court. He told
various media outlets yesterday, he still plans to challenge LB
1103, "but he's working on an effective approach, and it could
be months before he and others file a challenge."
