A Final Reminder: Vote
"[Senator Barack] Obama makes no secret of his intention to shut
down [the pro-life] cause and disenfranchise the millions who
are committed to the abolition of the abortion license imposed
by Roe. This is evident beyond doubt by his repeated and
enthusiastic endorsement of the Freedom of Choice Act, which
would, among other things, eliminate all state regulation of
abortions--such as informed consent and parental
notification--and provide government funding for abortions. FOCA
aims to extinguish once and for all the single issue in American
public life on which the free exercise of religion has had
greatest potency in the last several decades of our history."
Fr. Richard Neuhaus, on the blog of
firstthings.org.
I will not detain you with a lengthy edition. You and your
family have a vitally important civic obligation: to exercise
your right to vote. There is very little left that you and I,
dialoguing back and forth, have not already discussed many
times. Nonetheless, what follows, I believe, is important to
consider.
Bill Bennett is a prominent author, commentator, and former head
of the Department of Education under President Ronald Reagan. In
a 1989 lecture, Bennett said this which I have always thought to
be enormously important:
"About 15 years ago, Harvard professor Nathan Glazer entitled a
book of essays Remembering the Answers. His point was that in
the 1960s we forgot [and] many willfully rejected the most basic
and sensible answers to the first questions, to the questions
about what contributes to social well being and prosperity,
about what makes for individual character and responsibility.
Well, thanks to the president [Reagan] and many others, we have
begun to remember the answers, and we are no longer too timid to
speak them out loud."
In retrospect, historians will move beyond the passions of our
day to offer an even-handed appraisal of the two terms of
President George W. Bush. They will grasp that Mr. Bush helped
Americans to begin to remember the answers. And that included a
reminder of an absolutely foundational truth: that disrespect
for unborn human life not only destroys the most innocent among
us but also undermines individual character and responsibility.
Silky smooth and glib, Sen. Obama has bamboozled Americans by
the millions. A President Obama, aided and abetted by
enlarged pro-abortion Democratic majorities in the House and
Senate, would work to mute our voices, marginalize our cause,
and unleash a lethal regime only the anti-mothers that people
places like PPFA could love.
You have never been timid, never feared to speak the truth.
And the truth upon which we rest our case is the same yesterday,
today, and forever:
"This day I call heaven and earth as witnesses against you that
I have set before you life and death."
