Oliverio Defeats Mollohan in
West Virginia Democratic Primary
McKinley and Maynard Win
Republican Nominations
Part Three of Three
West Virginians for Life is
pleased that Michael Oliverio
has defeated 14-term U.S.
Congressman Alan Mollohan in the
Democratic primary. Oliverio won
56% to 44%, according to the
Associated Press, despite being
outspent 2-1 by Mollohan.
In the Republican primary, David
McKinley held on with an 8% lead
to win the Republican nomination
in a six-way race.
In past elections West
Virginians for Life Political
Action Committee (WVL PAC) had
endorsed incumbent Democratic
Congressmen Alan Mollohan in the
1st Congressional District and
Nick Rahall in the 3rd
Congressional District because
of their support for pro-life
policies. However, recently
Congressmen Mollohan and Rahall
voted to enact President Obama's
health care legislation, which
will provide federal subsidies
for insurance plans that cover
abortion on demand and opens the
door to other expansions of
abortion. It will also result in
large-scale rationing of
lifesaving medical treatments.
For these reasons, endorsements
from both West Virginians for
Life PAC and National Right to
Life PAC were given to Democrat
Mike Oliverio and Republican
David McKinley in the 1st
Congressional District and to
Republican Elliott "Spike"
Maynard in the 3rd Congressional
District.
Maynard won his Republican
primary in a six-way race and
will challenge incumbent Rahall
in the fall.
"Regardless of the outcome in
the general election, the 1st
Congressional District in West
Virginia will have strong
pro-life representation," stated
WVL PAC President Mary Anne
Buchanan. "And in the 3rd
Congressional District, we are
hoping that pro-life candidate
Spike Maynard will defeat
incumbent Nick Rahall after his
betrayal of the babies with his
health care vote. Our babies
need legislators who will stand
up for them regardless of the
pressure."
