Blume
and Planned Parenthood: A Pair of
Matching Bookends
By Dave Andrusko
"For information go to

Author Judy Blume, on her webpage judyblume.com.
Okay, I promise not to
get sidetracked onto a discussion of the
literary merits, such as they are, of
the collected works of Judy Blume. With
Mother's Day coming up, let me instead
just say a couple of words about the
fundraising promo Ms. Blume sent out on
behalf of the Planned Parenthood Action
Fund.
According to Blume,
"There is no organization that I know of
that supports motherhood and all that it
means more than Planned Parenthood."
That's why, she tells us, "I'm honoring
moms everywhere with my gift to the
Planned Parenthood Action Fund today."
At first blush Planned
Parenthood--the larger abortion provider
in the known galaxy--might seem like an
unlikely candidate. But if Cecile
Richards, who head Planned Parenthood
Action Fund (PPFA's political arm) is
"honored to relay her message about
motherhood to you today," it's perhaps
worth a moment to read that "message."
Okay, time's up.
I'm guessing, but I
think the point of Blume's fundraising
letter is that by giving money to PPFA's
political arm we honor our mother's
"courage." Come again? PPFA "protects
and advocates for the health of millions
of mothers and families" and no
organization helps young people grow up
to be in "charge of their bodies and
their lives" like PPFA.
Well, okay, two quick
thoughts. It comes as no surprise that
the same woman who has written the kind
of books Blume has authored would shill
for PP Action Fund and promo PPFA's sex
line for teenagers. Suffice it to say
that you should keep your kids as far
away from this drek as you possibly can.
Second, that it would
take the name of motherhood in vain is
of a piece with everything PPFA touches.
There is nothing--no matter how true,
noble, just, pure, or lovely--that PPFA
will leave unsoiled.
What a bunch.
