A Revealing Squabble Between Pro-Abortionists -- Part One of Two

Editor's note. Please also take time to read Part Two, a potpourri of interesting items to finish the week. Please send me your thoughts at daveandrusko@hotmail.com.

Ordinarily I wouldn't take your time to comment on a squabble between hyper pro-abortion groups over NARAL's sort-of surprising endorsement of Sen. Barack Obama at the expense of Sen. Hillary Clinton. What do we care if some of the old guard, including a number of pro-abortion congresswomen and EMILY's List, a powerhouse anti-life political force, are "stunned and deeply disappointed" with NARAL's Nancy Keegan for throwing her organization's lot in with Obama? After all, as the Congressional Quarterly wrote yesterday, "there is little daylight between [Obama and Clinton] on abortion-related issues."

We're on alert because of something else CQ's Jonathan Allen added by way of explaining NARAL's endorsement. He writes,

"Obama offended some anti-abortion activists — but may have helped his case for NARAL's endorsement — while campaigning in Pennsylvania earlier this year when he talked about the possibility that one of his young daughters could have an unintended pregnancy. 'If they make a mistake, I don't want them punished with a baby,' he said. The word 'punished' may also have been a signal to NARAL, which frequently uses the term when describing measures aimed at restricting teens' access to abortions."

I remember when he was called on the carpet for his brutally insensitive and callous remarks how Obama essentially rolled his eyes; how could anyone misunderstand the purity of his motives? As we talked about Wednesday, one of Obama's specialties is squirming out of accountability. He either haughtily dismisses legitimate criticisms as a "distraction" or when he can't completely evade responsibility lays it off on his "staff."  Wouldn't it be interesting if, as I strongly suspect is true, Obama was signaling NARAL that nobody, including pro-abortion Sen. Hillary Clinton, is ever going to out-pro-abortion Obama. What a guy.
