International Protect Life Award Given to the People of Chile

On Friday the 25th of February, the first ever International Protect Life Award was given to the people of Chile for their exceptional efforts in helping to protect the lives and improve the health of Chilean women.

About a dozen representatives of Non Governmental Organizations [NGOs]
met with Ambassador Octavio Errazuriz at the Mission of Chile to the UN to formally deliver the letter from the International Protect Life Committee announcing the committee's decision to award the people of Chile its International Protect Life Award.

Chile holds the immensely important distinction of achieving the lowest maternal mortality rate in Latin America. This milestone was achieved because of the efforts of the government and people of Chile. This nation has made it a priority to invest in its women and children by creating a multi-faceted approach to reducing maternal mortality. One key component is educational television advertisements under the banner of their “Chile Crece Contigo” (Chile Grows with You) campaign.

The campaign centers on a strong pro-life message that focuses on pre-natal care, as it also promotes the well being of children from the moment of conception through their first years. Chile’s President Sebastián Piñera has recently announced a new complementary program called “Comprometidos por La Vida” (Committed to Life) which will make many resources available to women who are facing a crisis pregnancy.

Jeanne Head, Vice President for International Affairs and United Nation’s representative for the National Right to Life Educational Trust Fund, as well as members of other prominent pro-life NGOs (non governmental organizations) , met with the Chilean Ambassador to the United Nations.

Dan Zeidler, coordinator of the International Protect Life Committee,
is welcomed by Ambassador Octavio Errazuriz. Seated next to Mr. Zeidler is Jeanne Head, Vice President for International Affairs
and United Nation’s representative for the National Right to Life Educational Trust Fund.

Dan Zeidler, of the International Protect Life Committee, expressed his appreciation as well as that of all pro-life NGOs to the Ambassador. “We are so pleased to be able to formally announce today our decision to award the people of Chile the International Protect Life Award,” he said. “Their achievements make Chile a safer and healthier place for women and their children, and a model for other countries to follow.”

The letter to President Piñera states that, “More Chilean women have safely delivered their babies than ever before! This is a great advancement in the area of women’s health, and an example for other countries working to achieve the reduction of maternal mortality, a key element of the UN Millennium Development Goals.”

The award is a way for pro-life leaders working in the international realm to hold up and shine a bright light on Chile’s achievements at a very critical time in the abortion battle. The United Nations and many of that organization’s agencies, such as UNFPA, UNICEF-- as well as International Planned Parenthood, incorrectly assert that abortion is the panacea for many of the world’s problems – tragically (and erroneously) including it as a way to reduce maternal mortality.

Pro-life leaders have requested the opportunity to meet with President Piñera in March of this year on Chile’s International Day of the Unborn Child in order to be able to present the award to him personally and express eternal gratitude for his and his country’s commitment to life.
