More about the Over $1
Billion that Has Gone to Organizations that Promote or Provide
Abortions
Part Three of Four
By Dave Andrusko
There is nothing quite
like seeing vague generalizations replaced (and/or verified) by
reports spelling out specifics in exacting detail. We all know
the abortion syndicate, headed by Planned Parenthood, receives
enormous amounts of federal money, but how much?

Congressman Pete
Olson (R-Tx.) |
I don't know about you,
but when I read the press release from the office of pro-life
Rep. Chris Smith yesterday I was stunned by how often PPFA and
its ilk had jumped on the government gravy train and how many of
the box cars were filled with money for the largest abortion
"provider" in the United States. (See
http://www.nrlc.org/News_and_Views/June10/nv061610.html)
And before we go any
further, just so we're clear about the source of the information
about federal funding of pro-abortion organizations. It came
from the non-partisan Government Accountability Office (GAO).
What we learn is that
since 2002, over $ 1 billion [that's the number one followed by
twelve zeros] in federal dollars--your money and mine--has been
allocated to six organizations that promote or provide
abortions. Roughly 60% of that total has made its way into the
coffers of Planned Parenthood. That is a staggering amount of
money.
Full credit goes to Rep.
Pete Olson (Tx.)--who was strongly supported by Cong. Smith and
other Members of Congress--for requesting the report. Here are
the figures compiled by the GAO for the six leading recipients:
-
Planned Parenthood
Federation of America received $657.1 million (2002-2008)
-
Population Council of the
United States: $284.3 million (2002-2008)
-
International Planned
Parenthood Federation: $93.8 million (2002-2009)
-
Advocates for Youth: $8.7
million (2002-2009)
-
Guttmacher Institute:
$12.7 million (2002-2008)
-
Sexuality Information &
Education Council of the U.S.: $1.6 million (2002-2009)
As Smith's explained
yesterday, "A significant portion of federal taxpayer funding
for domestic activities was provided through grants under the
Title X program which provides grants for family planning. This
program provides a funding source that helps abortionists set up
clinics that do family planning in one room and abortion in the
next."
Just to focus on PPFA for
a second. This more than half-billion dollars averages out to a
little under $100,000,000 per year-- and that does not include
state and local taxpayer funding!
You can read the GAO
report for yourself at
http://chrissmith.house.gov/UploadedFiles/2010_GAO_Report_on_Abortion_Organizations_FINAL.pdf.
Excerpts from Congressman's Smith's remarks are found in
Part Two of TN&V.
In this supposed era of
"transparency," wouldn't it be nice if states and the federal
government were required to annually compile a report about just
how many taxpayer dollars do wind up in the hands of abortion
providers?
My guess is that most
people would be at a minimum uncomfortable, more likely deeply
skeptical that this is a good use of tax dollars.
