Lead Soldiers
Part Two of Three

Editor's note. The following essay was written for the National Right to Life Pro-Life Essay Contest. Andrew Willard Stephan, Scandia, Minnesota, won third place at the senior level--grades 10-12.

It was one said, "Give me twenty-six lead soldiers and I will conquer the world!" referring, of course, to twenty-six lead pieces of type, one for each letter of the alphabet. The meaning of the phrase is unmistakable: Words have immense power.

It is words that comprise language--that blessed ability to communicate our thoughts. But some misuse the gift of language, selecting words that serve their purpose, distorting the truth or presenting only parts of it. Advocates of the pro-abortion group are a prime example.

Abortionists rename infants 'fetuses' to change the impression the phrase leaves. 'Disposing of a fetus' sounds much more clean and morally sound than 'killing a baby'. But no matter what they call it, the fact remains they are snuffing out human lives, in many cases for purely mercenary purposes. In all cases it is based in greed. Selfish greed, greed for money, greed for the 'right' to live without experiencing consequences for their choices. Because of someone's irresponsibility a young child is brought into this life only to be murdered before it has a chance to experience the light of day!

Women's rights advocates and lobbyists continually tell us "it's my body, my choice!" This is plain deceit. A child's body, while still in the womb, is connected to the mother's by only the umbilical cord, which allows the passage of nutrients into the infant's body. The baby pumps its own blood with its own heart and grows on its own. Its blood never mixes with that of its mother, nor can the mother feel and control the child as she does one of her own limbs. Presenting false catch-phrases as evidence makes a mockery of all that language was meant to be.

Harmful words are often used to blind people to the facts in an argument and tear down opponents of a certain issue without presenting real evidence supporting one side. Many people, confronted by opposition to their opinion, will retaliate by personally insulting dissenters, calling them enemies of progress, bigots, and worse-- all without cause. This scares others away from the target and hustles them into joining what is often the wrong side.

For instance, proponents of embryonic stem cell research will announce that anyone who prefers adult stem cell research to embryonic is 'uninformed', uneducated, opposed to science, and worse. This despite the fact that adult stem cells have been shown to have more and safer medical applications than embryonic ones! They themselves are truly the unscientific ones. The rank wrongness of this situation is exacerbated by the fact that the method they declare is the only scientific one requires the death of human embryos.

Words can be used for noble purposes, to declare the truth, to provide comfort, to explain grand and noble ideas. They can also be used to lie, cheat, kill, and draw others into sin. That is not the use words were intended for. That is not the purpose of lead soldiers.
