Use of New Media Converges with Traditional Media Outreach at NRLC 2010

NRLC Interns were a big help at NRLC 2010 in getting the word out through traditional and innovative outlets. Left to right:

One of the main goals of NRLC's annual convention is to increase awareness of the pro-life issues not just among the pro-life community, but with the public at-large. One of the primary methods we have used and continue to use to reach the latter group is actively engaging journalists in the local press and encouraging them to attend all or part of the convention.

As a result of our concerted efforts this year, journalists from the Associated Press, Pittsburgh Tribune-Review and Pittsburgh Post-Gazette attended and reported on some of the major sessions at NRLC 2010. Family News in Focus and American Family Radio's One News Now also broadcast interviews with NRLC President Wanda Franz, Ph.D. and Communications Director Derrick Jones with updates from the convention floor.

C-SPAN, too, taped Saturday morning's general sessions ("2000-Plus Pages of Really Bad Stuff" examining the deadly provisions of the Obama Health Care law and "Remember in November" which featured House Republican Leader John Boehner.) Both will air on C-SPAN sometime next week and we'll be sure to keep you posted on the broadcast schedule.

What set NRLC 2010 apart from previous conventions, however, was our full incorporation of social media to reach pro-lifers who couldn't join us in Pittsburgh. Through the CommBlog [http://nrlcomm.wordpress.com] ,we provided daily updates on what was happening in general sessions and workshops, links to webcasts of major sessions, and snapshots of moments from around the convention floor.

We also utilized the Comm Department's Twitter feed (@nrlcomm) to live-tweet the Saturday morning general session with Leader Boehner. As a result, we gained dozens of new followers in the course of 24 hours as our tweets of key quotes from the session's speakers went viral through the Twittersphere. A complete round-up of NRLC 2010 press coverage will be posted at http://nrlcomm.wordpress.com next week with links to some of the key coverage the convention received. Be sure to bookmark the blog and follow along on Twitter!
