Kentucky Right to Life
Association (KRLA), based in Louisville, and its chapters and
members, have begun 2011 with a strong witness on behalf of the
most vulnerable members of our society.
KRLA worked with Right to
Life of Louisville to gather more than 2,400 signatures from
throughout the Commonwealth for the annual Signature Ad in the
statewide edition of the Courier-Journal, the nation’s
42nd-largest newspaper in terms of circulation. The ad,
published on Jan. 23, asked and answered these questions: “Do
preborn children experience pain? Do abortions occur after 20
weeks? What can you do?”
On January 22, buses from
Louisville, Elizabethtown, Brandenburg and other cities took
more than 150 marchers to Washington, D.C. for the 38th Annual
March for Life, which took place on January 24.
Before the march,
Kentuckians enjoyed KRLA’s annual Congressional Breakfast in the
Cannon House Office Building. Representative Brett Guthrie
(R-2nd Dist.) attended, as did aides and staff members for Sen.
Mitch McConnell (R), Sen. Rand Paul (R), and Reps. Ed Whitfield
(R-1st Dis.), Geoff Davis (R-4th Dist.) and Hal Rogers (R-5th
Dist.).
The breakfast featured
remarks by Rachel Schumacher, president of Wisconsin Teens for
Life, and Havilah Benton of North Dakota Teens for Life.
Although Sen. McConnell’s
duties as Senate Republican Leader kept him from attending the
Congressional Breakfast, he was able to take time later to meet
with a small delegation of pro-life constituents from his home
state.
That same morning, many
pro-lifers gathered on the steps of Louisville’s courthouse
(Metro Hall) at noon for the Rally for Life. The annual event is
timed to attract the attention of office workers who pass by on
their lunch hour. Speakers included former state Rep. Bob
Heleringer and Angela Mintor, founding director of Sisters for
Life.
KRLA continues its
pro-life witness with the annual Statewide Rally for Life inside
the capitol rotunda in Frankfort, the state capital. The event,
which begins at 11 a.m., features Shari Richard, a former
ultrasound technician at an abortion mill who has become a
pioneer in ultrasound technology in the service of life. KRLA
Executive Director Margie Montgomery will introduce the
legislators who are able to attend.
