Meeting at the
Supreme Court: the March for Life 2011
Two of Three
By Dave Andrusko
When
covering the annual March for Life in Washington, DC, as
I do every year, I studiously avoid estimating the
numbers. Nobody knows, since the Park Police stopped
making educated guesses years ago, so I sure don't.
But what I can
talk about is how the crowd's size seems to compare with
the previous year's attendance. I thought the 2010 March
for Life was one of the largest of the 28 I had
attended. Judging by the many, many large tributaries
that fed into the river of pro-lifers that marched up
Constitution Avenue to the Supreme Court, attendance was
noticeably larger in 2011.
There is a lot to
read today, both here at "Today's News & Views" and over
at "National Right to Life News Today" (www.nationalrighttolifenews.org.)
So let me be very, very brief.
There
are a ton of pro-life freshmen in the House. A number of
them spoke today. If you tried you still could NOT miss
their enthusiasm and their eagerness to promote pro-life
legislation such as the "No Taxpayer Funding for
Abortion Act" (H.R. 3), the "Protect Life Act" (H.R.
358), and repealing and replacing ObamaCare. That is
what you want to see.
But the audience
was every bit as fired up as the speakers. What followed
was so spontaneous, it was nothing but sweet. A large
group of pro-lifers were so eager to get to the Hill to
lobby and to get to the front of the Supreme Court to
witness that they started down Constitution Avenue
before the formal March was ready to begin. It was very
funny, everyone laughed and met up in front of the
Supreme Court building.
In
the past I have occasionally been genuinely chided.
There couldn't possibly be THAT many young people,
right? Wrong. If possible there were even more in
attendance today.
Why were there
many tens of thousands of young people? Because they
"get it."
Pro-life champion
Chris Smith caught their motivation this way." They know
that the only thing the multibillion abortion industry
produces is victims and that women deserve better than
abortion. They know that the pro-life movement loves,
honors, deeply respects and welcomes post-abortive women
who are silent no more.
"Our young people
know child abuse when they see it. And they--all of
us--demand that it end."
