"KIDS" Again Will Be Meeting at NRLC Before the March for Life
Part Four of Four

By Eileen Haupt

On January 24, an enormous mass of pro-lifers will flood the streets of Washington, D.C. to participate in the annual March for Life to commemorate the 38th anniversary of Roe v. Wade. Out of the thousands of schools, churches, and organizations that will be represented, "Keep Infants with Down Syndrome" (KIDS) may be the only group at the march representing unborn babies who are literally sought out to be aborted.

Prenatal testing is routinely used to target unborn babies who have Down syndrome for abortion. After learning about their unborn baby's diagnosis, only a small percentage of mothers bring their baby to birth. According to the best estimates, an astounding 90% of these babies are aborted!

KIDS is comprised of families who have a child with Down syndrome. We will meet prior to the March for Life, from 11:00 a.m. to noon, at the offices of the National Right to Life Committee (512 10th Street, NW). NRLC will again provide sandwiches and refreshments for KIDS families and friends. We will then walk together to the March, which begins only a few blocks away.

This annual event gives families of children with Down syndrome a chance to gather and represent their children and all unborn babies with Down syndrome in the march. This year, it will be a privilege to be interviewed by the Catholic cable channel EWTN!

KIDS was founded by Leticia Velasquez and me, both mothers of daughters with Down syndrome. We thought there ought to be a group representing babies with Down syndrome at the March for Life. So in 2009, KIDS met for the first time at NRLC prior to the march. We had about 40 people, and even collected a few more along the route of the march.

Afterward, several families met with Rep. Cathy McMorris Rodgers in her office at the Capitol. She represents the 5th District of the State of Washington and has a 4-year-old son with Down syndrome. Last year, we were honored to have Rep. McMorris Rodgers and her son, Cole, join us at our event.

By holding this event and walking together as a group, we hope to raise awareness about the tragic abortion rate, challenge the misinformation about Down syndrome that often leads mothers to abort their babies, and proclaim the joy our children bring to their families and communities.

So if you are a family member or friend of someone with Down syndrome, please walk with us in March for Life! If you plan on joining KIDS at NRLC, it would helpful to contact Eileen at vteileen@comcast.net or Leticia at marysjoys@yahoo.com to let us know.

If you need to contact us the day of the march, you may call Leticia at 860-336-1835.
